Calling for a sweep probably would be to much, particularly the double header sat. Get 3 of 4, and I am happy. Need to keep the momentum we've been building up going for our Baylor road trip and the Big12 Tourney coming up.

BOOMER!!

These are the kind of teams we swept early in the season. Just sayin'.

I expect the Lobos to throw (in order): Rudy Jaramillo, Jake McCasland, Richard Olson and Sam Wilson (the normal starting center fielder who was a great high school pitcher locally). McCasland and Olson are the closest thing UNM has to power pitching in the rotation.

Both McCasland and Wilson were drafted last year, around the 20th round. They aren't quite "there" yet at the D-1 level but they are going to be really good. The Lobos have just one senior on their entire roster (Olson). A few guys they were counting on out of JC last year bailed, including one to Cameron University in Lawton. Freshman first baseman D.J. Peterson has been their most pleasant surprise.

This should be OU's series, but the Lobos can't be taken lightly. As I've mentioned before, they do have wins in Lubbock and Fort Worth, but they also got swept at home by Utah and Creighton. So it's not like anyone can really say what will happen.

Is Jaramillo related to the Cubs hitting coach?

Is Jaramillo related to the Cubs hitting coach?

I'm not sure, but I know his son Jason played at OSU.

I didn't realize that Jason Jaramillo was Rudy's son.

been an up and down year. nice to close this one out by winning the series.

going 4 deep or back to Rocha in the rotation against the same team, is tough. i assume a win in game #2 puts Rocha on the shelf maybe.

John gets out of the inning.

Interesting batting lineup tonight. Buechele has been moved out of the third spot for the first time all year and been moved down to sixth. I like the idea of trying to light a fire under Bue. His offense will take us as far as we can go and we can't have him slump in the latter part of the season like he did last year.

Mayfield gets the start at DH. I am not sure I agree with that move, though.

Final 6-2. OU completes the 4 game sweep of New Mexico.

I like the symmetry of it: 6-2, 8-3, 8-3, and 6-2. And all OU wins!

I really hated not being able to "road trip" to Norman for the game. At least I get to see the rematch next season. The series went about like I thought it would, although I didn't get to see or hear any of it. The folks' annual trip west to shop for Navajo rugs (they're real collectors' items) just happened to be this past weekend.

We have a pretty decent group of fans and alumni in central New Mexico who will be able to join any traveling Yardbirds on the visitors' side next year. That series in '12 should be at the rebuilt Lobo Field, not at Isotopes Park. But that will make our presence as OU fans that much more obvious. UNM should be a lot better next year, but I also expect OU to still be the better team by then.

NMSooner'80
5/16/2011, 11:53 AM
By the way, did you get any Lobo fans in attendance over the weekend? I would assume that some parents made the trip, especially Quay Grant's family. He's from Burkburnett, which is closer to Norman than anyplace else they play except maybe TCU.

I would hope that OU had good home crowds, despite the Thunder games conflicting with the times of those games. That would at least show them what they might get here once they get out of Isotopes Park (where the ballpark Nazis are something else, but I digress).

5/16/2011, 01:06 PM
There were a few New Mexico fans, but not many.

Our crowds weren't great. Averaged under 1000 for the weekend, I think. Lots going on around town and New Mexico wasn't exactly a great draw.

NMSooner'80

I don't think anyone from the UNM Scout.com site went. I did expect a guy from Edmond, who's originally from here, to go down for at least the weekend games. He's not a UNM grad, but he is a big Lobo sports fan - and he has posted before that he doesn't like OU because he buys the "OU bad, OSU good" nonsense that some in OKC have espoused.

I guess if there are no complaints on the UNM site, then all was good beyond the four-game scoreboard sweep. :)
