What is the most important position to be good at to win it all?

Linebacker. The defensive leader that can put even bad players into position.

Consistent penetration (that's what she said) from the DT can make the whole defense look great even if it has some weaknesses. How I wish we had a Tommie Harris on this defense.

OL - either LT or C. A bad LT will get your superstar QB killed and a good center can make a mediocre QB better.

Agree with this also. A great QB will not look so great if he has a mediocre OL. But, a great OL can make a good QB look great

O-LINE

Yes yes, but Auburn had a no-body oline and won it all. I think safety is a necessity, that or DT.

Nobody O-Line?!? They started 4 seniors and had an All-American at Left Tackle. Not to mention two 1,000 yard rushers in Cam Newton and freshman Michael Dyer... It all starts with the O-Line!

I don't think OL is as important at OU with how quickly we can throw the ball. Not that it isn't important...but just keep the DL off the QB for like 3 or 4 seconds and we are good.

Yes but they spent enough on a QB to make up for the OLine. Plus they didn't have to play an elite defense in the championship game.

OLine is less important if your QB can just call "36" then take the snap and start running.

Well it is why we can't run between the tackles when we need to. That's pretty important.

If ya don't think a good O-Line is just as important as QB, just ask Sam Bradford.

OL and DL are both more important than QB.

How so? Quarterback is a game manager. He is the sole leader of an offense, even power run teams, which are rare now. If the quarterback is off his game, the team usually doesn't do well. You could argue that LB is the second-most important because he is the leader of the defense, but not DL or OL.

Left Tackle or Center on offense. A kick *** DT on D.

OLine is not a position tho. The single most important position is QB. The single most important unit (ha) is OLine.

I like how people act like Auburn was 3-9 the year before Cam got there. I mean **** they won 8 games and only lost by 5 to the eventual National Champion...

The late TW sportswriter Bill Connors claimed the best formula to pick the winner of a big college football showdown was the team with the best QB/DT combo...

You could argue that LB is the second-most important because he is the leader of the defense, but not DL or OL.

He is not a game manager if he is running for his life. There aren't that many elite QBs in college ball anyway. Alabama won its last Title with a decent QB but he wasn't even close to the best player on the team. I would argue the sole leader point as well. Lots of other players can factor in as leaders on the Offense besides the QB.

Some LBs are leaders on their team. That was more true in years past when almost all teams were run first teams. The LB position is evolving rapidly as of late. Probably more so in the NFL than in College but we are experiencing it also. Teams are not necessarily going after the big hole plugging backs they used to covet. LBs are needed in pass support these days and need to be faster to cover more ground than before. Which means teams will change up their LB corp on obvious run/pass situations.

The foundation for a good team is the Oline and the Dline. A good Oline will help make a QB be better than he really is. Just like a great Dline that can read and blow up plays before they develop makes everyone else irrelevant.

Unfortunately the characteristics that make great lineman aren't all that common and even of the few people that possess them even fewer have their skills very well developed until late college or into their NFL careers. Exceptions are players like Gerald Mccoy or Ndomukong Suh. Suh was without a doubt the most important player on Nebraska's team his Sr year.

Also lineman frequently don't have long careers because of the sheer abuse their bodies experience.

Look at the NFL Drafts, QBs can go very high, but great lineman will never sit and wait. They always get snapped up quickly.

The position on kickoff coverage that fails to tackle too often. If we can fill that void, we are GOLD. It's cost us big the last 3 years.
