Account for roughly 85% of the budget, if I recall correctly.

The other 15% is what the congress and white house bitch at each other over.

And, of course, running government (and Social Security Admin and Medi Admin) and the military are real jobs. Several milliion of them.

If we want to balance our budget, we either have to take in way more money (and we could start, imho, by cutting off corporate pork such as virtually the entire farm aid bill (how much goes to 'family farmers', how much to Archer Daniel Midland? various tax credit measures for major oil companies and 'cost plus' bidding for government contracts). Or we have to cut expenditures.
If the latter, then several pretty easy things to do would be:
Raise the SS retirement age to 70 over the next decade or so.
Concentrate some real enforcement on Medicare fraud and waste.
Cut Military procurement and reduce nuclear stockpile.
