That is a great plains rat snake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantherophis_emoryi) if you are west of the mississippi, a corn snake if you are east of it.

They are nonvenomous.

Congratulations you killed the thing that was eating the mice around your house.

One of the the sure fire ways to tell is to look at the snakes pupil. If it is round the snake is nonvenomous (at least in north america).

You dont have to put your face in front of it. All you have to do is actually open your eyes and look before you go "OH MY GODZ A SNAK0RZ!!!1!! BETTER KILL IT!!!1"

Most of the venomous snakes in OK cant even kill a human being. People just love to kill snakes. Its the dumbest ****ing thing ever. Quit being such a bunch of pussies. Look at the size of that things head... Its about what as big as your thumb? Sure would do a lot of damage

Ok, Besides the Pupil. the easiest way to tell a Poisonous snake from a Non. Is the shape of the head. If its shaped like a V then its Poisonous . and Can hurt you. If its rounded then it aint Poisonous and only makes you hurt yerself.gettin away from em.

Fraggle145

do they eat pets? or just mice?

A snake that size (even if they get up to 4-5ft) can still just really eat mice, frogs, lizards, and the occasional bird. If its more than twice the size of the snakes body it isnt going to fit.

Most reptiles and fish (there are some exceptions) are gape limited predators. They can only eat what they can fit in their mouths.

Now if it was a boa constrictor or something (which live in South America and the Everglades) then ya it would eat your pets. But nothing in OK save for the largest Western Diamondback rattle snake could come close to eating your pets.

great point

we can apply this to medical doctors - who do that for a living - and never make mistakes

in fact - zoologist are well known for being incapable of human like tendencies

If you want to be a prick thats fine. If you cant trust the people who actually have some expertise in something or want to be all jealous of them then go for it. Just because humans can be wrong doesnt mean that the chance that they are wrong is greater than the chances they are right. Gaining expertise in something makes you an expert and if you cant respect that then there is no reason to argue with you about anything. It would render you incapable of believing any knowledge about anything unless you either came up with it or experienced it yourself.

I am not being all high and mighty about this. And I'm not saying I cant make mistakes, but I'm not making a mistake right now. I have expertise in this field and just as an additional check I have already sent out the picture to 3 of my friends that study snakes exclusively. They have all said it is a great plains ratsnake.

Have fun internet slapfighting it up.

I'm more worked up over being told that my expertise isnt worth anything.

A bullsnake usually has rings/stripes down on the tail instead of the square patches of color like they do further up the body.

The 2nd snake. The one striking at the camera.

THAT is a bull snake. The first one, yeah, that's a rat snake.

Back in the 70's I was night manager at an all night grocery store...at about 1 am my long haired, drug dealing, hippy, fishing buddy, Mike (aka Dumbazz), comes into the store...

He says "Phil, I was fishing and I caught the biggest damn snake I have ever seen!"

These two chicks overhear him and ask to see the snake...

"One minute." he replies...

DA goes out to his truck and comes back in with one of those plastic swivel top minnow buckets...you know the kind...white and red...

"Snakes in here."

Mike reaches into said minnow bucket...and in a second pulls out his arm with a 5-6' bull snake attached at the wrist..

"GAWD DAMN!!!!!" (or something similar, time has weighed on my memory) yells Mike...

He starts slinging his arm until the snake is no longer part of his body...

Now the pizzed off snake is on the floor in front of the office...that sucker is striking at anything that gets close...the snake is trying to haul azz to safety but it can't get traction on the waxed floor...so it makes a stand...

Mike moves in to recapture the offender...the snake strikes and connects multiple times at DA's legs while DA is looking for an opening...

And an opening he finds...he quickly reaches in with his hand and comes back with the snake...reattached to his arm!

Round two of the arm swinging takes place...more "GAWD DAMN!"

Now the two chicks...they aren't so sure they want to see the snake...their screeches of terror are only interrupted by their promise that they would get me fired for putting them into harms way...they think better of it and haul azz never to be heard from again...

After several attempts DA finally got a grasp on the situation and put the snake back into it's plastic home...

Once DA got to the parking lot he turned the bull snake into a bull whip...CRACK!

A lot people automatically kill snakes because they have a phobia towards them. Some people get that animosity towards snakes from the Bible, not realizing that the snake was used as a figure of speech. There was not a real talking snake in the garden of Eden.

I only kill snakes if my life is danger, so I've never killed a snake.

A dude was in a small shed on a site and when he turned to walk out a snake was coiled up hissing...he thought he couldn't walk back out so they called 911.

I'm with Fraggle on this one. All the stupid goobers out by me hack every snake they see on sight with a shovel or hoe. They go to great pains to make sure the poor snake doesn't get away.

Me? I shoo them into the woods or back under the woodpile. I'd rather have 500 snakes than 1 rat/mouse/gopher. The only snakes I've ever killed are rattlesnakes (in Arizona) and a few copperheads that made their way to my back porch. I only killed them because one of our rat terriers got bit a couple times by one of the copperheads and momma said "kill it" so I did.

Anyhow, carry on. Oh yeah, it's a rat snake. I used to have a buttload of snakes growing up. My favorite was an Everglades Rat Snake named Queenie. I had her while I was in the Army. She just loved to slide up on the waterbed in the hot summer in North Carolina. It would always get me to jump when I'd turn the lights out, crawl in bed, roll over on my stomach and curl my arms under the pillow - right around a 6' snake. No matter how many times I did it, it always got me to jump about 5 feet straight in the air.

I managed to get the dog inside and came back outside with an old .45 (think a .45 that you would see on Gunsmoke). By the time I got back out there the snake had decided to leave and was no longer coiled up. I emptied that .45 at him from about 10 - 15 feet away and didn't hit him once!

He said, "we've got a snake in the hen house. I'm from Canada, ya know, and I don't even know how to load this thing." I took the gun and ammo from him and said I'd see what I could do.

We walked over to his house to find his wife (who is a Navaho Indian, and I have no idea how she wound up in Mississippi with a Canadian) beating the hell out of the hen house with a rake. I handed the gun back to him and said, "I can assure you, there is no snake in that hen house anymore. I bet you don't get any eggs for a while, either."

You can see their pupils from farther away than you think.

It would have to be about 100 yards away cause i wouldn't get any damn closer than that; i do not like snakes of any kind

Well if that snake killed your brother, he'd be the first person in history to die from a copperhead bite.

Wouldn't be the first, but definitely one of the rare few.

Here's an encounter with a rat snake from a few years ago. We get 4-5 a year in the chicken house. I normally catch them and let them go. For years, we had one over 6ft long in the barn, but it wasn't there last summer.

I'm thinking a fish net isn't the more efficient way to catch a snake.

Rat Snakes, Corn Snakes, Great Plains Snakes, among dozens of others are all closely related sometimes nearly impossible to tell from one another. You can't from color. They can be almost any color.

They aren't dangerous though. Really unless you have an over abundance of them and they are depleting your pet lizard population you should just leave them alone.

In Oklahoma the only snake that will bother you if you don't bother it is the Copperhead. They won't seek you out or anything but many of them will bite anything that gets near them. Even them they usually won't inject you with venom unless you are stupid enough to not get back.

Once in a blue moon I'll run across a Rattle Snake that is bat**** crazy that will strike repeatedly at you. For the most part they will haul *** if they know you are around.

Snakes are a good thing. Unless you inherited an extra ***** gene just leave them alone.

The common thread here is leave the damn snakes alone.

they slither right in until they get stuck. Seems to work OK. If you pull them out it hurts them because it goes against their scales. But they can get out on their own just fine. Rat snakes are aggressive biters, so I'm not really to keen on getting all that close.

she's a snake killing machine.

Prior to the Great Dane that warned us about a copperhead, we had a St. Bernard (yes, we liked big dogs) that put his nose where is shouldn't have been and got bit by a rattlesnake. Poor baby's face swelled up to the size of a watermelon but he was no worse for the wear in the long run. A couple of years later, he did a better job of keeping his distance from a copperhead that he found coiled up by the back steps. He was content warn to us and then let the people kill the snake. I don't think Saints have the speed to deal w/ poisonous snakes! ;)

Mods can't read PMs.

Well......depends on what access the mods have.

You can read anything from the board, PMs, posts, etc, on the backend through the database.

In order to do that, you would have to have access to the host server username and password, the database name and password...and then know exactly were to look in the about 150 - 200 tables in the database.

It would be a lot more trouble than its worth...but yes, technically, some moderators/admins can...if they have all that access granted to them.

However, a moderator in the sense of this place and most boards...then your right, they cant read your PMs.

Not entirely true...Little Sahara you see rattlers quite often...and they will strike if you get too close.

Snakes are not dumb, especially venomous snakes. They know their venom is precious and only produce so much of it at a time, so they cannot go wasting it.

Almost all venomous snake bites are dry bites. Rattlesnakes may not go out of their way to bite you, but they are defensively aggressive and generally do not run away...they get defensive in a hurry! Especially the Larger Western Diamondback and the smaller Eastern Diamondback.

As far as killing any snake...why? Sure some are dangerous...and lethal...but they are not out to get humans. All snakes I have came across, would rather scare you away or get the hell away themselves than to have a confrontation with you. The only reason any snake strikes at you is because they are being threaten, and they are defensive strikes, not hunting strikes...so even the venomous snakes wont inject their venom, and if they do, it is not as much as they would into a rat or their prey.

That is not to say that people in this country havent died from snake bites, but the occurance is very rare.

That is not to say that people in this country havent died from snake bites, but the occurance is very rare.

and then there was that guy from Tecumseh a few years ago, that got bit by a rattler and then fell or jumped or something into a brush pile and was promptly bitten by a copperhead and died. (I forget the order it happened but got bitten by both kinds within minutes)

THAT my friends is some bad luck.
