The style that predates the Stout was phased out in Britain, and nearly lost before an American resurgence saw it's return.

Yeah Anchor does a good Porter. I would like to try the Telegraph Porter mentioned in link. Porter aged on a wine barrel sounds good.

Very soon I am going to make either a bourbon barrel aged porter, or smoked Baltic porter. Either one will benefit from aging and be especially good when winter comes around.

Ooh... smoked baltic would be nice.

Fade to Black smoked baltic porter was really good, but limited. Can't get it anymore.

This one from Great Divide should still be available.

I cannot think of a single bad beer from Great Divide. They are a solid brewery.

Has anyone had a beer+food pairing that really stood out to them? Every once in awhile I run across something like that which really pops out.

Porters are so robust, they seem best by themselves. However, lamb and red meat is good with a porter.

I really love Negra Modelo which basically a Mexican version of a Boch, with Mexican food.

All your english ales go really well with fried bar food.

Oysters plus any beer is incredible, but I like em with a Stout/Porter unless it's really hot out. Then I go ESB/pale ale/or IPA.

I'm talking more a specific beer with a specific dish. The one that sticks out to me most is the North Coast Pranqster, a Golden Ale paired with the Porter Peach and Jalapeno Creme Fraiche Nachos from Elote. That was an eye opening experience.

OE is a really nice pairing with week-old half eaten fried chicken that you've picked out of a trash can.

I'll make it a point to note some specifics, and share accordingly.

Seriously though, any porter or dry/imperial stout and fresh oysters is going to be perfect.

Porter is scrumb-diddly-umptious. Sierra Nevada makes a great porter, and for a great made-in-Oklahoma option, try Coop Ale Works Gran Sport, brewed right here in OKC.

As far as porters go, Fullers is the benchmark in terms of widely distributed porters. The best around is Founders from Michigan.

When talking Guinness, Foreign Extra Stout is the way to go. Unless, you are watching your figure. The draught version has barely over 100 calories.

What can you say about Fuller's? They make some fine brews.

Also I'd add that IMHO Anchor Porter > Sierra Nevada Porter

A simple trick for beer pairings is to contrast the style of beer against your selected food. A good pairing with a ribeye is a sour, like Russian River Consecration. It cuts through the richness and fat of a steak really well. On the opposite end a nice porter like the one I mentioned earlier is a good counter to spicy BBQ. Also wit beers and wheats are great compliments to sushi.

The Stout is my third batch. My first batch, an American wheat, was a big hit. Batch two gets it's day in court this weekend.

I'm stepping up in difficulty of process.

I am NOT into sours. I tried the Consecration, and... well, I can appreciate the flavor and the complexities, I just don't like it.

(512) Brewing Company (http://512brewing.com/) just released their (512) Whiskey Barrel Aged Double Pecan Porter, the store in Austin that had it was already out when I went to get some.

(512) WHISKEY BARREL AGED DOUBLE PECAN PORTER – 750ml BOTTLES now available! (http://512brewing.wordpress.com/2011/04/11/512-whiskey-barrel-aged-double-pecan-porter-750ml-bottles-now-available/)
April 11, 2011, 10:16 pm

Yes, this year’s edition in 750ml bottles is making its way to stores now. Email me here ([email protected]) to find our where you can get it. This is a stronger, more intense version of our famous Pecan Porter recipe aged 2 months in Maker’s Mark Bourbon barrels. Same format as last year, but this time a few more to share – approximately 80 cases (5x more than last year!). Hopefully this gives more people a chance to try this delicious beer.

Those big, dark beers really go well with the bourbon and oak. The pecan would be something new to me.

I know of some who have tried and and really like it. 512 and Real Ale out in Blanco do quite a few special batches with whiskey or wine barrel aging.

I don't typically drink a lot of porters. I can tell you to stay away from Sam Adam's Honey Porter, probably the worst non macro corn/rice beer I've ever had. Sam Adams always earns a "meh" from me anyway, but this was terrible.

Sam Adams has an Imperial Series. It's the first time I've been impressed by a SA beer.

I had the Wee Heavy Scotch Ale. I could do a whole thread about my love for the Wee Heavy. The Sam Adams is very smoky, but very good. It's also about 10% abv.

Very tasty, although I think I prefer the Anchor better. I haven't had the Anchor in awhile, but I remember being blown away by it. I've moved across town and sadly the liquor store over here doesn't carry it. I guess it's about time to make the trek to Midtown and stock up...

Porters are one style that I think works well with an American adjustment. I still like the English style, but we make some damn good porters over here.

If I'm not mistaken the Anchor has a slightly more present bitter/chocolate flavor which puts it over the top for me. It's really based on personal preference though.
