my ole lady is a teacher, and she has kids in her class that don't eat enough. She has one kid who went through the last weekend only eating on Friday's school lunch to Monday's school breakfast. He missed school yesterday and said all he had was iced tea.

this should be unacceptable

**** we took better care of kids in Iraq.

I'm not a big supporter of welfare but I'd rather spend that money on our kids than Egypt and Pakistan and all the other places we ship billions to.

i'm pretty sure i'd be stealing to feed my kids if it came down to it. i'm not sure how it's possible that a kid like that isn't eating.

The food bank reports over 500,000 people mostly elderly and kids in Oklahoma alone go hungry like this.

Unfortunately, you can't choose your parents. I completely agree that a parent who allows their children to go hungry deserves to be shot, maimed, hung, tarred-and-feathered... :mad:

It's my understanding that the backpack programs are growing at an alarming rate. :(

I'd say report it, there is no excuse for kids to go hungry. We have programs in place to make sure that everyone can eat. Thankfully I've never been in a position before where I have had to make a choice between paying rent or eating, and I know that if I was in a situation I would have a hard time taking goverment assistance, but if I had kids going hungry, dammmmmnnnn straight I'd take the food stamps to make sure they wouldn't be going hungry.

Why do you guys say report it. Its been reported. They know they are trying to help. This year one of the putnam city schools had to set up a food pantry because they found they had I think 17 kids on the hs football team not eating enough.

it's not like government cheese is exactly the healthiest option - nor do most of those people have the education and knowledge to provide healthy meals or have an exercise routine

I'm pretty libertarian...for adults.

For kids, though, I think a dose of socialism is well placed. I see nothing wrong at all with having a set lunch (and breakfast if you want to show up early) just the same as I see nothing wrong with relying on public schools for the vast majority of schooling. Further, I think a two year national service obligation after high school would be peachy. Let's have the kids from Beverly Hills bunk down next to kids from Harlem and go build trails in national parks. Kids are different than adults and should be so treated.

This really tears me up.......and I mean it.

My wife was an elementary teacher before we had our first kid.....I would see a lot of things that would bring tears to my eyes.

I give everything I can to help support children...hoping it really does go to the children and not for beer, cigs, etc, etc. I often help families that appear to be in need when they come in my store....especially if they dont come in asking for it. My heart really goes out to the kiddos.

My belief is that NO CHILD should ever go hungry. I would work 5 jobs walking through broken glass for my children to eat.

If a child goes hungry it is not the child's fault it is the POS parent(s) or caregiver. The POS's should be beaten (by me if needed).

No child should ever go hungry...I would take 'em all in if I could.:D

Our school has started sending home blue backpacks from Feed the Children which has things like Peanut Butter, soup, soy milk, crackers, some kind of fruit. You would not believe how many elementary kids get themselves up, dressed, and to school.
We teach them, feed them, clothe them, but can't disclipline them.

I see this a lot......folks will come in and ask me for $$ for food for their kids.....all along while having a new carton of cigs or a 12-pack in the car. I tell them I will not give them $$ but I will take them to the grocery store and buy them some food....heck I even keep some in a fridge in my back office.....it happens so often.

More often than not when I offer food over money the man or women will accuse me of not wanting to help....then my reply is....."I will not support your habits while your kids go hungry". I used to try and be nice about it...but no more........

My mom was telling me yesterday that she spoke with Switzer's wife and she is starting a shelter to help the homeless kids in Norman. Apparently there are around 450 kids living on the river and under the I-35 bridge. Very sad.

You're being a tad melodramatic here.

I'm pointing out that this is not a judgment call situation. DHS needs to figure out whether that child is deprived. Too many people, even teachers, don't do the right thing in these situations. I'm glad usmc's wife did.

Our church does a Wednesday night meal for kids. If their parents won't bring them, we take the bus around. There is also small potluck every Sunday after church so they are eating at least twice a week during the summer.

And I agree, some parents should be tortured/shot/whatever for the way they mistreat their kids.

the oklahoma regional food bank has a program for those kids...they send the kids home with a backpack full of kid-friendly food for the weekend...and if they have younger siblings, they send one for each of them too.

the Food bank is my absolute favorite charity...the overhead is only 3%, the execs don't have huge salaries and they really do get food to hungry people.

It is the regional food bank. I don't know why I thought Feed the Children. We probably hand out 40 backpacks every Friday.
