I think so. I've read much about Lt. Murphy, including Latrell's book Lone Survivor which tells the story more completely.

He intentionally exposed himself to certain death in an attempt to save his teammates.

Why do you ask?

It's just too bad he wasn't named after his father cause then he would have been Lieutenent Dan!!!!!

And if that guy isn't deserving........who the F would be?

Careful 2121.. Faninama only likes serious, considered responses in his threads, or he'll fly off.

He's more skittish than a snipe and twice as hard to catch.

Guess I am just not sure the point of his thread. I read the story the first couple of times and the guy sounds pretty bada$$ and deserves to have the medal.

And twitchy little F'ers don't bother me. Shoot.....look at The.....we love that twitchy little spaz

I have no doubt he deserved the medal, but do wonder why tying and gagging the goat herders wasn't discussed.

or assuming you were compromised at that point and getting the hell out of there...

sooner_born_1960

The article said they were attacked an hour after setting the goat herders free. I just assumed they ratted them out.

yermom
5/5/2011, 06:57 PM
i mean leaving as soon as they let them go, or arranged to be picked up, etc...

it sounds like they just proceeded as normal from that point

Mongo

MoH is a srs thing. they just dont hand them out, oh, like the Nobel Peace prize

yermom

i'm not that clear on the criteria of either, but the latter sure seems like a joke...

sooner_born_1960
5/5/2011, 07:09 PM
I'm not questioning the bravery of the sailors involved, but the article says they discussed the morality and whatnot of killing the herders. It doesn't speak of any discussions that might have been carried out concerning tying the ****ers up for a while.

Read the book.

Part of it had to do with their ROE.

OK. Until I do, could you let us in on what was discussed concerning non-lethal means of subduing the herders?

I've seen guys lead men into danger and make a calculated decision and everything goes wrong but every guy makes it out alive. I've seen it go the other way too. We have a saying that "the definition of experience is learning from how you f****d up the time before". When it doesn't kill anybody, it's great. When it does, it does not make you any less brave or less deserving of honor for serving.

Not shooting or detaining the goat fuc err herders was probably a mistake, but that shouldnt necessarily be connected to his actions later. Fact is he sacraficed his life to save those of his comrades.

sooner_born_1960
5/5/2011, 07:24 PM
I'm not questioning the MoH, at all. My questions center around the rest of the story, and why other options were not discussed. Kill them or let them go weren't the only two options.

hindsight is 20/20... (maybe they didn't see Saving Private Ryan either)

but yeah, he did the human thing, and basically got killed for it.

he also risked his life for his team, and fought on while mortally wounded. you can't really ask a soldier to do much more than that, i don't think.

It's rather hard for me to question the conduct of men in that situation, but it sounds pretty "honorable" to me. In fact, think his conduct is hard -- no, impossible -- for any message posters to question.

In hindsight, yeah they should have done something to those guys. But when you read the book you will realize that

1) The herders took that route every morning and keeping them would have definitely alerted some of the villagers and they might have come and look for them

2) There was a 14 y/o boy. Although he says in the book that he kid looked at them weird and refused to take the treats they gave him...they just couldn't bring themselves to harm the boy.

Jk I suspect you just don't like the fact that
someone would dare intrude on the warm and
fuzzy you feel from the story due to buying
into the author's intent to play on the readers'
emotion and patriotism.

As far as getting pissed when I read flippant replies
to serious threads I guess that I should remember that
it's an entirely different crowd that populated this board
than those who used to post on here a few years ago.

Most of the older posters that started posting here in 2000
have moved on. I probably should get a clue and do the
same. I only cone back ocassionally to see what the
few remaining old timers are up to.

riff raff? maybe if fanima had ever picked up a rifle or served, i might give even a shred of credence to somebody questioning whether a CMOH winner was deserving or not...or if rather than posting the story - he had the balls to actually post his own opinion

i get that you two are cow farming buddies and you'll white knight for him whenever you get the chance

but i stand by my statement - it's a stupid question....ignorant, idiotic, insert whichever adjective you like

I've picked up several rifles, and served many women. Does that make me qualified?

(as for the other stuff, everytime faiminamina posts a thread, there's an inevitable Goodbye Cruel World post)
