Are Jews a Race or Belief system?

I think there is a misconception that Jews are a race of people. Being Jewish is just like being Catholic, Baptist, Muslim, Buddhist, ect... Can a person claims to be Jewish and not follow the Jewish customs. If a person who claims to be Jewish eats pork- are they still Jewish? I think it is just a belief system. If I start following Jewish custom then I would be just as Jewish as any other Jew. Is my thought process wrong?

You can break the ethnic and genetic lines down even further if you contrast Ashkenazi Jews from Eastern Europe with Sephardic Jews from Spain and the Middle East.

So if the question is ethnicity vs. belief system, then the answer is absolutely "both."

If a black kid was adopted by a white family, the kid would still be considered "black." If a kid born to Jews was adopted by a Christian family, he would be considered a Christian. The problem with defining anything as a "race" is that it's mostly based on easily identifiable (and really meaningless) physical traits like skin color. It's all about perception.

Depends on how you look at race. Anthropologists look at race based on cultural grounds not on genetic grounds since we are all 98% alike by mitochondrial DNA. Some people look at skin color and face features. In that sense most of what we know as famous Jewish people are actually Europeans. *Names like Blitzer, Wolfowitz, Leibowitz, Goldman and so on are not Jewish of Israel, but actually European names.

Some look at race as a mixture of culture and religion and ancestry. So Jon Stewart an agnostic, European-looking, of Hebrew descent, considers himself Jewish. That’s fine with me.


My question is this. Every race + nationality had a starting point. There was a time when there were no French people then gradually a group of people with similar traits, customs, language, and aspirations became the French.

Depends on how you look at race. Anthropologists look at race based on cultural grounds not on genetic grounds since we are all 98% alike by mitochondrial DNA. Some people look at skin color and face features. In that sense most of what we know as famous Jewish people are actually Europeans. *Names like Blitzer, Wolfowitz, Leibowitz, Goldman and so on are not Jewish of Israel, but actually European names.

Some look at race as a mixture of culture and religion and ancestry. So Jon Stewart an agnostic, European-looking, of Hebrew descent, considers himself Jewish. That’s fine with me.


My question is this. Every race + nationality had a starting point. There was a time when there were no French people then gradually a group of people with similar traits, customs, language, and aspirations became the French.

So you all told me right - I was afraid to turn him into DHS but when I did the family stepped up and got him somewhere where is is doing better. And obviously you are not the first to raise this question, as a quick search of the internet will show lots of opinions, but most agree that is can be a combination of factors, and not strictly defined by your religious belief.

You have a very myopic view of the world. The world is not black and white. There are many shades of grey. You cannot seem to grasp that the term Jew can refer to two different things. There is the religion of which can either be born into or convert to. Then the is the ethnicity/race of which you can only be born into. It is both, yet you fail to grasp that.

Click on any of the links posted on this thread that you seem to have overlooked. That will give you a an idea of the general consensus that being Jewish can be determined by several factors. And is not specifically genetic.

There may not be a Jewish gene, but that does not mean it is not a race.
