It's Tulsa's dirty little secret.

Almost as infamous as the disdain for dentistry in England.

Gotcha ;)

I've said all along that the biggest problem in Tulsa was the Dutch-hating firemen.

I had a Dutch Geography Teacher and I still think he was a German Spy.

He looked kind of white but he was bald, 5'6'' and could dunk like Nate Archibald.

He could do that Vulcan neck pinch and the mind meld too.

this thread grew too quickly to read in it's entirety; was a consensus reached
pertaining to the original question ???

I lived in Sherman Oaks,CA, decades ago & proposed this (or a similar) question to a New York Jew. (there were many in the apartment house where i lived). His answer wasn't conclusive.

i think the answer is "both".

i do know that Sammy Davis Jr. was not a Jew by race.

"both" is probably the consensus.

Alternative good point was Jewish by belief and Hebrew by race.

Surprise revelation was Dutch according to firemen in Tulsa.

I can state, based on current experience, that the myth of the frigid Jewish Princess is indeed a myth, probably meant to keep us gentile boys away from their race.

Please please elaborate further!!

Late to the party ( as usual ) so......where to start:

1) The last time I looked there were three generally accepted races: Caucasian, Asian, and Black. Lots of sub-categories in each.

2) Jews are not a race. A religion, a culture, an ethnicity or any combination of those, but not a race. There are Jews in India and China that date their heritage back many, many centuries. Ethiopian as well.

3) Hebrew is a language, not a religion. Jews have been referred to as "the Hebrew people" but that is a misnomer relating to the fact that since ancient times, Hebrew was the biblical language of the Jews.

4) Messianic Jews ( an oxymoron, BTW) and Jews for Jesus are not Jewish as they accept Jesus as their savior. Jews believe in One God and One God only. For example: Can an Evangelical Christian who follows his faith be an Athiest?

5) Although both the Jewish people and the Arab people are Semites, i.e. trace their lineage back to Abraham, the term "anti-semite" has traditionally been used to relate to Jews.

6) Who is a Jew? (generalizing)
a) One who identifies with the Jewish people ( loose interpretation)
b) One whose mother was Jewish and practices the Jewish religion ( more rigid interpretation)

7) As for someone's comment about "haggling": Negotiating a price, bargaining, is accepted practice in all of the countries of the Mediterranean. Greeks do it, Italians do it, Spaniards do it. Arabs and Muslims do it. Chinese do it, too. I've even known some Swedish Christians who do it. Ever buy a used car?

Jews and Christians both believe in one and only God and it happens to be the same God.

That's why it isn't an oxymoron. They are people that follow Jewish custom in every way except that they accept Jesus as the Messiah.

It's the belief in Trinity that separates.

Yes there are. However, these people are Christians.

I'm sure they'll get over the fact they you don't recognize their Jewishness.

If you'd like to convince them they are no longer Jewish I can try to put together a contact list. Of course, this would only take care of the local ones. You'd have to find a better way to let the rest of them know they aren't really Jewish.

I don't believe snarkiness exists....so it seems we are stuck.

FWIW, my rabbi and I both believe that messianic Jews are, at best, confused. If you believe that Jesus was the Messiah, congratulations! You're Christian.

Not Jewish.

If being Jewish is only a belief, then you are correct. But if being Jewish is also a culture, then you don't cease being Jewish just because you disagree on a point.
