Figueroa gets 6th year of eligibility at Miami
May 3, 3:48 pm EDT

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP)—Miami offensive lineman Joel Figueroa has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA and will be able to play for the Hurricanes this coming season.

The 6-foot-6, 323-pound Figueroa was sidelined for much of the 2010 season after starting games in September against Ohio State and Pittsburgh. He was a redshirt in 2006, then appeared in 36 games over the next four seasons.

Figueroa has spent most of his Miami career on the right side of the line, with experience at both guard and tackle. He’s made 15 starts for the Hurricanes, who have already completed spring football. Figueroa could not play during the spring while awaiting NCAA clearance.

Miami football player charged with sexual battery

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP)—Miami defensive tackle Jeffrey Brown was arrested Wednesday and accused of forcing sex on an intoxicated female in her dorm room.

Police say the alleged incident took place in the early morning hours of April 30. Brown surrendered to police Wednesday afternoon and was charged with one count of sexual battery about an hour later.

He has been suspended indefinitely from the Hurricanes football program.

In a statement, the university said it “has become aware of the serious charges made against a student athlete,” without referring to Brown by name.

The university declined further comment, and it was not known if Brown had obtained an attorney. His name was not listed on Miami’s football roster or the team’s depth chart for training camp which opens in August.

Attorney Thomas Durkin is representing Brown and said in a statement that the player “did not engage in any criminal conduct whatsoever on the evening in question, nor did he violate any rules of the University of Miami or its football program.” He said Brown looks forward to his day in court to “clear his good name.”

Brown was booked at 7:29 p.m. Wednesday and held on $10,000 bond, according to Miami-Dade County online corrections records, though jail officials cautioned that the bond amount may change. It was unclear when he would make a court appearance.

According to the arrest affadavit filed by the Coral Gables Police Department, the 6-foot-3, 297-pound Brown was an acquaintance of the alleged victim. Police say Brown took her back to her room after she became ill and passed out in his bathroom, then helped her into her bed, doing so “under pretense that he was concerned for her well being,” according to the affadavit.

Police said the alleged victim fell asleep, only to be awakened by Brown allegedly removing her “comforter and underwear.” Police said Brown then had sex with the woman, despite her pleas for him to stop.

Police said Brown initially denied having sex with the alleged victim, then acknowledged doing so under further questioning.

“The victim said she was helpless to resist the defendant’s actions because of his stature and her state of intoxication,” the affadavit said.

Brown is a redshirt freshman from Evanston, Ill.
