can you do in a row?

I've been working on losing weight, yet once again, but this time, I'm doing all body weight exercises, and it's been going very well!

I ballooned out to 245 lbs over December, but I'm now down to 219 since January.

Oh, and I can now do 60 push-ups in a row.

How about you? :)

For the record Rez.......all of us old f'ers hate you. Just sayin out of sheer jealousy of not being as good as I thought I once was. Cause the older I get.....the better I was.

Increasing strength in your core, shoulders, arms, and chest.

SoonerofAlabama

It is just an upside-down bench press. You can go a bit deeper though.

nope. a bench isolates your chest and tri's. pushups use upper body and core muscles

Eielson
5/22/2011, 01:51 PM
Increasing strength in your core, shoulders, arms, and chest.

It doesn't increase strength when you're doing 60 reps. That only increases endurance.

SoonerofAlabama
5/22/2011, 01:52 PM
Push Ups-
Pushups promote strength, balance and stability by developing several key muscles, including the pectoralis major in the chest, the deltoids or shoulder muscles, the scapular muscles and rotator cuff, the triceps located on the back of the upper arm and the upper back muscles.

Bench Press-
The bench press primarily works the pectorals (major/minor), but secondarily develops the triceps brachii (extends elbow), the anterior deltoid (flexes shoulder), and the coracobrachialis (assists shoulder flexion). More emphasis can be placed on secondary musculature by varying body angle and grip.

I don't think pushups are the be all end all of workouts, but they definitely provide me with a strong foundation upon which other strength training will be built as I progress.

SoonerofAlabama
5/22/2011, 02:00 PM
Put weight on your back to increase resistance. As in if you are up for it, a 45-lb weight.

Eielson
5/22/2011, 02:03 PM
Pushups can be a good start for strength training. I know of a guy who trains people, and when he trains kids, he won't let them bench until they can do 10-20 (can't remember the exact number) pushups. Eventually it loses its value when it gets into really high numbers as far as a strength exercise. You either have to add resistance (possibly a vest or a backpack with stuff in it), or use it as an explosive exercise (something like plyometric pushups) for it to be all that effective.

soonerhubs
5/22/2011, 03:23 PM
Well whatever. I'm building endurance then, which is what my trainer wants me to do.

I do an hour run 3 times per week, then finish with a series of stretches. This includes doing 50 pushups. I had to work my way up to that number by starting with 20, then adding more each week. I'm not sure there is much benefit to doing more than that at one time, but there could be.
Oh, and I'm 46.

When I was 18-21, I could do 75-80 pushups in a timed two minute period without going to my knees. I would do about 50-55 non stop, then I would knock out the rest in intervals of 5 by periodically stopping and resting in the pushup position.

Now in my late twenties, I can do about 65 pushups in a two minute period without going to my knees. 40-45 non stop, then the rest in intervals of 5. It sucks...
