Toby Keith: “It's a great day to be an American”
The Oklahoma music superstar and staunch military supporter, who is currently on his ninth USO tour, praised the military and President Obama for tracking down Osama bin Laden, and became a trending Twitter topic in the wake of the terrorist leader's death.

“It's a great day to be an American,” Toby Keith declared Monday while touring the Middle East.

Toby Keith: “It's a great day to be an American” Following the death of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, the Oklahoma country music superstar became a trending topic Monday on the popular micro-blogging site Twitter.

The Norman resident is currently visiting U.S. troops stationed in the Middle East on his ninth United Service Organization/Armed Forces Entertainment tour. He was without cellular phone service for a time after President Obama's announcement Sunday night that bin Laden, the mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, had been killed in a firefight with Navy SEALs in Pakistan.

Once he regained cell service Monday, Keith issued a statement through his publicist, Elaine Schock:

“It's a great day to be an American. I've been telling you for a decade that the U.S. military would hunt down and kill world enemy No. 1. While traveling abroad I am blown away by the positive coverage by the world media,” Keith said in the statement.

“There IS a consensus in the world media I have never seen before. Thanks to our commander in chief for having the cojones to finish this job, but the mission is far from over.”

Among the Clinton native's signature songs are the pro-America anthems “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” and “American Soldier.” Twitter users were posting lyrics — and a few jokes about rising sales and a new album — following the events of Sunday night.

Former Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach even got on the Toby Keith bandwagon on Twitter:

“Ironically, Toby Keith is on the USO tour the same time we shoot Bin Laden,” Leach wrote on his @Coach_Leach account.

Keith, who grew up in Moore, wrote “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” in 2001. He was inspired by the 9/11 terrorist attacks, along with the March 2001 death his father, Hubert “H.K.” Covel Jr., a military veteran, in an Oklahoma traffic accident.

Although the song has often sparked controversy, Schock said it was clear the anthem resonated with many people as they heard the news of bin Laden's death.

“People completely related to the song last night. I can't even tell you how many emails I got last night and today about it,” Schock said in a phone interview Monday. “I think for many people, it's one of the first songs that really popped into their head. Good Lord, we've waited for this for 10 years.”

On his current USO tour, Keith has visited and performed for U.S. troops in Bahrain, Iraq and Kuwait as well as on board the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier and USS Leyte Gulf missile cruiser. He is well known for taking his tours to remote forward-operating bases and on occasion has been forced to seek shelter from mortar fire, sandstorms and other hazards,

“4 mortars hit close as I was about 2 take stage last night - we had to hunker in a bunker til all clear,” he posted Saturday on his official Facebook page, along with a photo showing the star and others, including military personnel, in what appeared to be a bunker.

Since his first USO tour in 2002, Keith has visited U.S. servicemen and women and their families stationed in at least 11 countries, including Africa, Belgium, Cuba, Germany, Italy, Korea, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan and Macedonia, along with troops on the front lines in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2009, he received the Military Officers Association of America Distinguished Service Award.

“Since my first tour, I've been hooked on performing for troops. I start looking forward to my next USO trip the minute I touch down here in the States. I love it and I love our troops, they are the best in the world,” Keith said in statement from his latest USO tour.
