I had to call my mom to tell her, as I knew she would be thrilled. She loves only 2 teams - Sooners and Cowboys.

I guess. So you think DM was the highest rated player on their board and that's why they took him? If so, at least they have a philosophy...which is nice.

Like what needs? S, CB, DE are needs. I think RB would be in the bottom 2 of needs for that team.

I'm not watching. That's why I asked who was left as far as players who might be better than DM. Do you take a bubba DE not rated so highly just to fill a spot or do you take the highest rated player?

Yeah, that's the question...what is your philosophy. If they actually have a philosophy and best player available is it, then they are sticking to that with this pick so I can't argue with that.

I'm not watching either, so I don't know who is left but I was looking for a player to address a need. Maybe this is one reason I am not a GM. :D

Murray has a nose for the endzone inside the redzone as far as receiving goes and yes he'll be better than Choice at that. His strengths are 3rd down and redzone receiving. He'll do well for them in that role.

Today is a great day for all Americans! Definitely buying a Demarco Cowboys jersey!

Barber is due way too much money next season....Felix has really yet to have a breakout season....think having Demarco will be a nice insurance policy and i'm sure Garrett will find a way to get him playing time if Felix can't produce.

That being said, I do agree with some other sentiments of the Cowboys having great needs than an RB....They got some more help at ILB, which is good. Still need help at S and DL. Unfortunately a couple of the safeties and DBs they were looking at went off the board before it got to the Cowboys, and a lot of the premier DL guys went off the board early too.

Sooner Than Later
IRVING, Texas - Keeping with their pattern of staying put and drafting players near the top of their board, the Cowboys used their third-round pick, No. 71 overall, on Oklahoma running back DeMarco Murray.

The 5-11, 213-pounder ran for 1,214 yards and 15 touchdowns in his senior campaign with the Sooners in 2010. He also caught 71 passes and has experience as a pass blocker. The 23-year old from Las Vegas scored 63 touchdowns in four years in Norman.

On Thursday night, Jerry Jones hinted that running back could be a potential draft target, hinting that the Cowboys wanted to add special teams value to the position.

Each of the Cowboys' top two picks were used to infuse youth to some of the oldest position groups on the roster. The Cowboys used their second-rounder on linebacker Bruce Carter of North Carolina, and their top pick, No. 9 overall on Thursday, was used on USC tackle Tyron Smith.

Dallas Cowboys draft OU's DeMarco Murray

BY JAKE TROTTER, Staff Writer,
Published: April 29, 2011
When DeMarco Murray got the call from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, he could barely control his jubilation.
By the time Jones passed the phone to head coach Jason Garrett, Murray lost it

“I’m so pumped up right now,” Murray said to Garrett. “I’m going to do everything in my power to get us to that championship.
“So glad to be a Cowboy.”
Friday night, Dallas made Murray the No. 71 overall pick in the NFL Draft, selecting the Oklahoma running back early in the third round. Murray was the first and only Sooner taken through the first three rounds of the draft.
Earlier Friday, the Cowboys took North Carolina linebacker Bruce Carter with the 40th overall pick in the second round. Their first-round pick Thursday was offensive tackle Tyron Smith from Southern Cal with the ninth overall selection.
“I definitely thought they were interested, but at the same time you never know with the draft,” Murray said. “My whole family grew up Cowboys fans. There was a bunch of yelling and screaming — I think somebody had a heart attack.”
The Cowboys’ decision to go with a running back in the third round likely signals the end of the Marion Barber era in Dallas.
Speculation is that the Cowboys will release Barber, coming off his worst NFL season, and slide Murray into the role of third-down back alongside Tulsa native Felix Jones and Tashard Choice, who played at OU two seasons before transferring to Georgia Tech.
“I think it’s going to be great,” Murray said. “They have a lot of good backs there, and I’m definitely going to be ready to go out there with those guys.”
Jones and Choice figure to split the majority of the touches. But because of his versatility, Murray could prove to be a valuable player for the Cowboys as a receiver out of the backfield in passing situations.
In addition to rushing for more than 1,200 yards, Murray reeled in 71 passes and was OU’s second-leading receiver. He was especially prolific in finding the end zone — both on the ground and through the air — over his Sooner tenure, passing Steve Owens' 41-year-old school record with 63 career touchdowns.
Murray answered durability concerns, too, making it through the entire season without injury, despite totaling an average of 26 touches per game.
“People always want to mention that,” said Murray, who began taking yoga to help stay healthy. “I missed four games in four years, and that was in the beginning of my career and had no problems after that and I definitely bounced back and carried myself well.”
The Cowboys also selected Murray to impact special teams. Thursday night, Jerry Jones hinted that he wanted to add special teams value to the running back position, whether it be covering kicks or returning them.
“I imagine I’ll be on special teams,” said Murray, who averaged almost 27 yards on kickoff returns in his career at OU. “Covering, returning, whatever — I want to get on the field no matter what.”
OU safety Quinton Carter also had hopes of being selected on Day 2 of the draft, but he will have to wait until Saturday to hear his name called. The only other Sooner certain to be drafted is defensive end/outside linebacker Jeremy Beal.

DeMarco's going into as good a situation as he could have hoped for. Dallas likes using their RBs are receivers, and we all know how good DM is at that. They also are in dire need of some KOR help, which we all know DM can immediately fit in in one of the three areas, RB, receiving RB option or KR guy.

As stated above, Barber's on the back nine of his career in Dallas. Maybe even like the last three given his recent injury issues. They addressed two important issues at tackle and linebacker first, so you can't complain too much that they got maybe the biggest steal of the draft in DM.

Barber will likely be dropped, and free to look elsewhere as a free agent.

Felix will be the main man, and Murray will likely back him up. Choice will still probably be fighting for scraps at #3, and if a decent trade opportunity arrises, they may deal him. Personally, with the injury potential of both Jones and Murray, I'd hold on to Choice as long as possible.

The fans slobber all over Choice, but there have to be reasons he hasn't gotten many carries except when both Barber and Felix are hurt. The fans don't see everything. Obviously the Cowboys have some major reservations about him.
