build one or buy one?

The advantage of buying one is that it will have wheels and be portable.

The advantage to making one out of an old fridge is that I could keep beer mugs in the freezer portion above. It would also be cheaper.

If I make one I'd put it in the garage and run a line from keg through garage wall and have a tap coming out of the bricks in the backyard.

You're right. There's no way you could build one and reinvent the wheel.

Build it. I helped a friend build one when he started homebrewing. The options you have for customization are endless, and you'll be happier with the result.

I KNOW...you could add wheels to a full sized fridge to make it easier to move around!!!

If portability is a huge concern, this is a great idea...

that's nice!

I built one out of a chest freezer a few years ago but it was sold during a move. I bought my FIL one for his birthday and had his cattle brand put on it. He loves it but the MIL is not a big fan.

Men with new babies should be worried about diapers and whatnot. They shouldn't be worried about kegerators, Sheesh!!!!

I built mine. It's about 1/2 the price for the exact same thing, plus it was fun to do and I could pick out better components.

I don't drink beer enough at home to justify one... otherwise I would build one myself. If I really wanted to do it right I'd make a cellar pull like they have in England. That would be AWESOME.

And if you ran a line from the garage all the way out to the back patio, wouldn't you lose a beer or more just in the line itself? Seems like a waste...

OutlandTrophy

I'd only hook that line up when having a pool party or just kicking it in the back yard.

Either way you're going to have beer sitting in there. Either you flush it out after every use, or it just sits and gets stanky.

Each glass that you pour after even a brief delay should be nice and warm for you!

I'd make one. I put in an outdoor fridge in a bar, and some guys I know put in a kegerator. Almost all wish they had done a fridge instead. If you like beer and your guests like your choice of beer then keep the cost down...especially if you might change your mind later

Mjcpr

Have you considered stocking an ice chest out back and having everyone get their beer of choice from that? They are highly portable.

Motorize it.

And include a flux capacitor.

Put some castors on a deep freeze. I am going to be building one soon, and running hose from the kegerator in the garage, thru the wall...fancy assed faucets in my living room. **** yeah!

NormanPride

beer bottles > poured into big bucket > put hose in bucket > dump a bunch of those faincy plastic ice cubes in bucket > run hose outside

done. you use the faincy ice cubes so you don't water down your beer.

The question you have to ask yourself is whether you're brewing or just drinking.

If you're brewing or considering it, convert an existing 'fridge. You'll need it for the cooler temperature ranges you have to have for lager fermentation.

This. Also, it is not difficult or expensive, except for tap towers. The tower are expensive as hell. If you Google some DIY kegerator builds, you will see that the towers are not the only way to go.
