Sony's PSN was attacked on Wednesday and has been shut down ever since. Company spokesmen acknowledge the attack and estimate the network's return to be Tuesday.

That's no online games, movie rentals and Netflix for millions for practically a week.

This sucks, but what is worse is the realization that the future of chaos and disruption is being foreshadowed by a sucesessful sabotage of a GAME network.

We know what's coming.

Went to a Redbox movie rental box today and some a-hole had smashed the monitor so you couldn't rent or return your movies.....

There are video cameras all over the place there. I can't imagine someone getting caught doing that....I bet if you got busted for that....you'd probably rather of kill someone.....imagine the cost of repair....the average cost of business they lost during the time....

That has to be a felony.....lol

PSN update: Sony isn't sure your credit card data is safe (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/04/psn-update-sony-isnt-sure-your-credit-card-data-is-safe.ars)

Sony isn't saying much about the PlayStation Network outage (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/04/playstation-network-still-down-due-to-external-intrusion.ars), but a new update doesn't give us much hope for a speedy resolution. Even worse is the fact the company doesn't seem to know if your financial data has been compromised. Sleep tight!
Satoshi Fukuoka, a spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment in Tokyo, spoke with PCWorld (http://www.pcworld.com/article/226162/Sony_Yet_to_Determine_Scope_of_PlayStation_Network _Attack.html#tk.rss_news) and claimed the company "has not yet determined if the personal information or credit card numbers of users have been compromised, but that Sony would promptly inform users if it found that was the case."
Luckily, Sony's Patrick Seybold has yet another update to let us all know that Sony doesn't have much of a clue about when this mess will get fixed. "Unfortunately, I don't have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time," he wrote (http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/04/25/psn-update/). "As we previously noted, this is a time intensive process and we're working to get them back online quickly. Will keep you updated with information as it becomes available. We once again thank you for your patience."
Since you can't play your games online, why not use that extra time to double-check your credit and debit card records?

The PS3 sits dormant most days because of the long arse load times, install times, download times compared with 360.

But, 360 is not completely off the hook. I'd say this is the equivalent of PS3's RROD... and event so widely reported that angers customers so much that it may sway future buyers away from your product.

That RROD kept me from even considering an XBOX when it was time to move on from my original.

Until this, the only argument I ever heard from 360 fanboys was that PS3 had a lot of updates and it doesn't have HALO.

Seems to me, updates are exactly that...an update. Who wouldn't want their technology updated? HALO just gives me motion sickness anyway, like a little Japanese boy with seizures...

I've been playing a lot of Just Cause 2 and Fallout 3 lately, so being network deficient hasn't hurt, and Yermom clue-ing me in on the Netflix dealio has made me less upset that PSN is down.

Frankly, PS3 reminds me of iPhone. The original piece of equipment has been upgraded so much that it isn't even similar to when I purchased it.

Having said all of that, I would prefer to have my CC# kept safe.

SoonerLVZ
4/26/2011, 09:17 AM
My biggest problem with the PSN being down is the lack of information coming from Sony. It has been what, 6 days now and they haven't told their customers if their CC#'s and personal info is secure and safe. It seems like a horrible PR move to me. If they would have come out and said "we believe your personal information has been compromised, and we are taking the network down for improvements to it", it would make me feel better. But there is little information coming out, no mass emails to the user community explaining the situation, just short blog posts.

The main reason I bought a PS3 was for the bluray player with a gaming system included. I can still watch netflix, blurays and play games. But it sucks when one of the selling points is free online play and they take the network down.

Anonymous response to lawsuit

The activist group Anonymous announced their intent to attack Sony websites in response to Sony's lawsuit and, specifically due to Sony's gaining access to the IP addresses of all the people who visited geohot's blog, terming it an 'offensive against free speech and internet freedom'[13][14] Although Anonymous admitted responsibility to subsequent attacks on the Sony websites, much speculation has arisen concerning a sustained collapse of the Playstation Network in April. However, Anonymous has denied any involvement in Playstation Network's self-imposed hiatus.[15]

According to Sony, the initial cause of the PSN and the company’s Qriocity service was due to an "external intrusion", and that it was subsequently kept off-line in order to facilitate an infrastructure upgrade as an apparent consequence of this attack. [16]

for what it's worth, at least according to wikipedia, which we all know may or may not be correct, Anonymous denies attacks on anything other than sony's websites...

It's official. Sony lost your info.

Sony admits utter PSN failure: your personal data has been stolen (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/04/sony-admits-utter-psn-failure-your-personal-data-has-been-stolen.ars)

Sony has finally come clean about the "external intrusion" that has caused the company to take down the PlayStation Network service, and the news is almost as bad as it can possibly get. The hackers have all your personal information, although Sony is still unsure about whether your credit card data is safe. Everything else on file when it comes to your account is in the hands of the hackers.
In other words, Sony's security has failed in a spectacular fashion, and we're just now finding out about it. In both practical and PR terms, this is a worst-case scenario.
What did they get?

Here is the data that Sony is sure has been compromised if you have a PlayStation Network Account:
Your name
Your address (city, state, and zip)
Country
E-mail address
Birthday
PSN password and login name"It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained," Sony announced. While the company claims that there is "no evidence" that credit card information has been compromised, it won't rule out the possibility.
Their advice is to be safe, rather than sorry. "If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained."
What can you do?

You are warned to keep watch over your accounts, and to be aware of your heightened risk of fraud due to the security breach. "For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of e-mail, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information," the company said. "Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information."
Sony has also provided a wealth of sources for data and protection against identity theft.
You may wish to visit the web site of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission at www.consumer.gov/idtheft (http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft) or reach the FTC at 1-877-382-4357 or 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20580 for further information about how to protect yourself from identity theft. Your state Attorney General may also have advice on preventing identity theft, and you should report instances of known or suspected identity theft to law enforcement, your State Attorney General, and the FTC. For North Carolina residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 9001 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-9001; telephone (877) 566-7226; or www.ncdoj.gov (http://www.ncdoj.gov). For Maryland residents, the Attorney General can be contacted at 200 St. Paul Place, 16th Floor, Baltimore, MD 21202; telephone: (888) 743-0023; or www.oag.state.md.us (http://www.oag.state.md.us). To be fair, Sony does apologize for the inconvenience. There is still no update on when service will be restored, but that is the least of your concerns if you have a PlayStation Network account. It's time to change your passwords, at the very least, and if you're like to be completely safe it's not a bad idea to cancel your credit or debit cards and request replacements.

It's also worth noting that Anonymous has stated that Sony kept backups of Credit Card info in plain text format.

after a couple of tries you should be able to see the Netflix interface in the background, and then if you hit the circle button, you should be in

It actually gives me a clean Netflix screen, starts to stream then the login comes back up. Tried dozens of times. Oh well.

None of us are as cruel as all of us.

Valued PlayStation(R)Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011,
certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account
information was compromised in connection with an illegal and
unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this
intrusion, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full
and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our
network infrastructure by rebuilding our system to provide you
with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill
as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and
efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident,
we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following
information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country,
email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login,
and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data,
including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip),
and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may
have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your
dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have
been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit
card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have
provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity,
out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit
card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have
been obtained.

lol

I laugh every time Sony pulls a stunt like this. They have a huge history of PS3SUX.
