Wannabe to me would consist of a "traditional power" whose history and tradition is locked into some national championship a zillion years ago or no national championships at all. They (their fanbases) harp on and on about tradition and are oblivious to their lack of success and any kind of championships in recent seasons. To me, the following programs completely fit the bill...

Arkansas
Texas A&M
Clemson
maybe UCLA, but I don't live out west so I don't know how bad their fans are.

Michigan also fits the bill, but to a far lesser extent because they at least have numerous conference championships and even a national championship in the last 15 years.

I'm a little surprised with the consensus being R-kansas.
They must have adopted a more humble attitude since their SEC relocation program was instituted.

Of course being 0 for 19 in the SEC can do that.

I think you have to break this one down by conference.

I agree that Arkie is the biggest wannabe from the SEC. The SEC schools that have experienced some success (Bama, Auburn, LSU, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee) have tradition while no other school in the conference claims to belong among the elite.

Syracuse, Pitt and WVU have all had their moments but you'd have to combine them to have the makings of one good program.

I don't think there are any in the ACC since none of them purport to be storied programs on par with Miami and FSU.

In the Pac whatever, except for Oregon none of the programs claim to be in the same club as SUC. UCLA might have a long time ago but that fan base surely knows they only flirted with being a top-tier, tradition rich football school (in the 60's and 70's) and are now where they can realistically expect to be, so Oregon is the only real West Coast Wannabe.

I don't know how long it takes to have an actual tradition but if Boise St. does not experience an appreciable drop off over the next 5 seasons I would have to say they have outgrown wannabe status. The closest any other MWC team comes to being a wannabe is TCU.

Big 10 schools that are not as tradition rich as they claim, my vote goes to Michigan State. They have played in the Rose Bowl only four times (though to their credit, they won three of those) compared to Penn St. which already has made three appearances. The biggest game in school history ended in a tie (to their credit, it was Notre Dame that went for the tie) and their most memorable coach was named Duffy. They do get my vote for the coolest matchup of mascots if/when they play SUC.

I live in Durham, NC, and trust me, the NC State fans think that they are a powerhouse in football, even though Duke and Wake have won ACC championships more recently. Also OSU, Georgia, Texas A&M, WVU, Texas Tech, Iowa, Washington, and Arizona State.

On the subject of wannabes, Texas acts like it is the dominant school in the conference, even though it has less than half of the number of conference champs and national champs compared to OU. Bunch of friggin posers.

In my mind, it's gotta be Clemson, they've constantly been hyped for whatever reason, and they always suck and get blow out by Georgia or some other SEC team that's not at the top of the SEC.

Having attended Wake, I'd say the NCSU fans are much more delusional about their hoops program. They are still living off Valvano and David Thompson and think that any top tier coach should just want to come on in, be their coach, and compete with Coach K and Dean Smith/Roy Williams for recruits. Their last two coaching searches have demonstrated how this mindset conflicts with reality.

1. Georgia- has done absolutely nothing under Mark Richt compared to other coaches in his time in the SEC. The fans still live off the 1980 national title and the lore of Walker.

2. Oklahoma State- Obvious reasons.

3. Michigan (1950-) fans live off the fact their program is never in trouble, tradition that happened before the UPI started conducting the Coaches tally and they feel as if their all time wins means anything (they started in 1879 so of course they have an advantage).

4. Arkansas- fans praise the fact many great names have ventured elsewhere (Johnny Majors, Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson, Jerry Jones, Pete Carroll, Lou Holtz to name a few) but none of them accomplished the ultimate goal and that was winning a NC. They claim one but they finished #1 in both main polls.

5. Colorado- Hey dimwits, It has been 21 years since your "Glory Day" and 5th down debacle.

6. Wisconsin- 3 Rose Bowl wins under Alvarez and they think they are the greatest program ever. Their fans are the absolute worst of the Big Ten.

7. Auburn- cheated for both national titles and their fans act like they have been some power forever. These folks are just plain ignorant.

A&M tops my list. Their fans think swaying back and forth means they have some tradition. Yeah, the tradition of swaying back and forth. The football team has a tradition of being losers.

Arkansas is a close second. They haven't been really good in decades and their fan base is super obnoxious.

osu is also a wannabe, but they are so delusional it's more comic than anything else.

I vote for them, and I will add that their old slogan during the early-to-mid 1970's was "The Year of the Cowboy." That was back when every year was going to be "their year" and they'd beat the evil Sooners and leave us in the dust.

The only time in that general era that they did win (but still lost, as usual, to NU) was 1976. They also milked 31-24 debacle for all it was worth, clear into the Dykes-M. Gundy-Sanders era.

Have to go with Missouri on this one. Living here in MO I get to hear
how "great" they think they are. I actually had someone tell me that
Missouri should be in the same class as OU, Texas, Bama, FSU, and USC
b/c they've won just as many games as those schools in the last few
years.

No denying that UGA has had a couple of rough seasons the past 2 years, but in Richt's first 8 years there, they:

won the SEC East 3 times
won the conference twice
won at least 10 games 6 times (they won 8 his first year & 9 in '06)
went 6-2 in bowl games, including 2-1 in BCS bowls
went 82-22 overall, good for a 79% clip

That ain't too shabby in my books. The only thing that anybody really has over him in that conference is a NC (or 2 in Meyer & Saban's case) & that's not something that I just can't bring myself to hold over any coach because more often than not, there's a good deal of luck somewhere along the line involved in winning one of those.

I agree 100%. Richt has earned a couple of down years, but won't get much more slack. The Dawg fans are not only frustrated with the last two years, but the 2008 squad was loaded with Stafford and Moreno and more and didn't reach expectations.

I believe Richt's reputation is that of being "too nice" (i.e. religious) and that he won't ever win the big one. Same reputation Tom Landry had after 11 years in Dallas. He's won enough to stay as long as it takes to win. He just needs to convince the locals of that.
