Fun game if we won it for sure......

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)—The conference championship game is gone, but only some Big 12 coaches will miss it.

The league’s grand finale for the past 15 years was played for the final time in December, done in by the departure of Nebraska to the Big Ten and Colorado to the expanded Pac-12.

For some coaches, it was a potential thorn in the side of a run to the national championship. For others, it was an important incentive to improve their program.

Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops has seen it both ways.

“Those years when we were undefeated or looking at the national championship right in front of you, it was really difficult to play in that Big 12 championship game,” Stoops said Monday on the Big 12 coaches’ spring conference call. “But those other years where that wasn’t the case, it was incredibly exciting to play in it.”

Stoops won the title game seven times and lost only once, easily the best record of any coach. But he sounds mostly glad to have it out of the way.

The way he sees it, who needs an extra hurdle on the way to a national title?

“And then you look at some other teams in other conferences that weren’t playing a championship game. They were sitting there already with their hand played waiting for the national championship,” Stoops said. “Now we’re in that situation.”

Instead of playing for a conference title on the first Saturday in December, his Sooners this season will face rival Oklahoma State. The shrunken conference also moved Texas-Baylor to Dec. 3 to create a presence on the same day the SEC, Big Ten, Pac-12 and other conferences will crown a champion.

Still, some coaches did note the loss of an event that generated revenue and exposure for the Big 12.

“The championship game and the divisions, I think that’s really good for college football,” Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said. “I think it’s rather obvious, too, because the Pac-10 went to it—the Pac-12 now, if you will, did the same thing.

“We’re going to miss that. I don’t think there’s any question about that.

Bill Snyder was even more sentimental about the title game going away, saying that Kansas State’s trophy case wouldn’t be so full without the old setup. The Wildcats won four division titles and the 2003 title, upsetting an undefeated Oklahoma team that still played for the BCS title.

Snyder’s team was perhaps the most harmed by the championship. Kansas State was ranked No. 2 in 1998, lost to Texas A&M in the title game and dropped to the Alamo Bowl instead of playing for the crystal ball.

“I would prefer to have two divisions and still play a championship game,” Snyder said. “You looked across the country, and we were one of the few that had a championship game. And now, we’re one of the very few that does not—if there’s anybody else that does not have one.

“Others have realized the value of that championship game. It was worth an awful lot of money, but more importantly it was worth tremendous exposure for our conference.”

For some, though, the potential for another loss is too great.

“I’ve always felt like that our goal as a league should be to have a national champion, and anything that takes away from that we should avoid,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. “And we’ve accomplished that by eliminating the championship game.”

The remaining 10 teams will instead play a round-robin schedule against everyone else in the conference—moving from eight conference games to nine. So there’s still one extra chance for a slip-up against a conference foe—and one less in nonconference play.

“It’s going to be hard to go through all those ball games and not stumble at some point,” Texas A&M’s Mike Sherman said. “You hope you don’t, and you work and coach and play that you don’t, but I think you really have to make sure that all your Is are dotted and Ts crossed in every ball game because every one is so significant.

“There’s no chance for a comeback with a playoff. You’ve got to win them all. That’s obviously very difficult in this conference.”

I'll miss the game but I like the way it all ended, especially beating Nebraska, with Oklahoma winning most. Stoops 7-1, legit. The downside to me is that if there's a bunch of one loss teams then the benefit of the doubt will likely go to the conferences with the title game.

Not sure why the big 12 hasn't been busy this off season trying to live up to the name. The CCG is just what the doctor ordered when the BCS computer starts adding up those all important brownie points for the big game. When all the BCS conferences finally have one, it's a fair way to let the elimination games begin.

I liked it. More OU games and I saw 7 of them end with wins and us holding up a trophy. Nothing wrong with that.

Without it, one loss makes getting to the title game real difficult.

Hard not to like the CCG as an OU fan. 7-1 record and the 1 didn't hurt us from a BCS standpoint. But it's still a double edged sword - if we don't play a completely outmatched Mizzou in '08, we would have DM in the title game.

I enjoy the CCG myself, but like Boulder said, it's hard not to like it as a Sooner fan. And we didn't lose the NCG because we didn't have DM, we lost because of bonehead plays on the goalline.

I'll take watching Sooners at jerrah world every few years for MNC instead of a CCG.

somehow any remarks by Gundy and Sherman about the Big 12 champ game make me think of Robert Allen and Mangino talking about a P90x workout.

I'll miss it the Conference Championship Game. Hanging out with the backwards poke fans is not a substitute for the excitement of a Title Game.

I never said we lost because we didn't have DM, but it would have been a different game with better odds for us; and it's just more fitting to have the best players in the biggest games.

There have been plenty of memorable Big 12 Title games though...

my two favorites... last year's OU-Neb final send-off and 2008 OU-Mizzou and breaking Number 1 Mizzou with solid defense.

Losing the Big XII title game is a big deal. It sucks for the fans, and it's going to hurt us in relation to the rest of the country as well. It wouldn't be as big of a deal before, but now that the Pac-10 and Big Ten have confernece championship games and we don't, I can see us being on the outside looking in to the BCS title game in the future.

I can agree with most of what I've read, whether it be pro or con... I tend to think not having the CCG is going to haunt the Big XII at some point unless the powers-that-be actually get proactive and get 12 back in the XII.

But one thing I'll never support: Having a CCG in KC...outdoors... in December... at night.... Always thought that was retarded.

Big 12 less 2 will not go back to 12 teams until the major TV contracts are up for renewal. Retaining the current B12 was about $$$. With the number of teams at 10, the money pie is only cut 10 ways instead of 12. That is how OU and Texas (and A&M, to an extent) agreed to stay with the current arrangement.
They will not agree to cut the current pie by 12.
When the new major contracts are up for renewal, I think we add two teams (or 4 or 6) or subtract 10 (disband the B12).

Guaranteed the lack of a CCG will hurt some years if we have enough seasons w/o it. Just as having a CCG knocked a conference team from the title game a couple of times. The only reason the CCG hasn't hurt more often is due to the imbalance between north and south divisions. It can't be optimized both ways, so pick your poison. My guess is the conference will err on the side greater $$ given the choice, so I look for them to try to add back 2+ teams when possible.

Some preseason articles picking the Sooners, seem to be assuming an undefeated season. Getting past Texas and Florida State, I would personally put the cowboys in there too, with no CCG, has a little bit of the Boise State feel to the season. One loss and much like the smurf turfers, maybe not enough schedule to make up the difference.

I'll miss going to KC. Made it to every one but '08.

None of them will ever top 2000 though. Stayed in the team hotel. Road the elevators with Jimmy Wilkerson, Brent V and Michael Thompson. Followed the team bus to the game.
Westport Friday night, the Plaza on Saturday for lunch...
I love KC during Christmastime too. Good times.

I have to think that the current setup is very much temporary. Surely there is something in the works, planning stages, something, to improve the conference.
