It's time for 2011's first system capable of producing hook echoes and basketball size hail. Tonight. In Oklahoma.

The TV weather d00ds are all sporting wood and folks are liable to get PO-ed because regular programming is going to be interrupted a lot.

Violent weather, you say? Well, I SAY:

I'm only happy if it rains
I'm only happy it's not complicated
And if it'd rain the ground would appreciate it
I'm only happy when it rains

You know I love it when the news ain't bad
And why it feels good when the ground's not sad
I'm only happy if it rains

I'm only happy if it rains
When it's dry forever things are going wrong
It's really been a sad sad songs
I'm only happy if it rains

I only smile with clouds dark
These wildfires are turning stuff black
Accidentally set? They'll tell you that
I'm only happy if it rains
You'll get the message by the time it's through
When burn bans don't effect me and you
I'm only happy if it rains

Not the first, we had "larger than tennis ball hail" and funnels just east of Enid and north of Ponca last Fri.

Tulsa is doomed right?

In central and SW Oklahoma I think we would willingly accept the risk of getting blow away by a tornado just to get the rain that comes along with such systems.

I always look forward to the multiple weather threads this kind of year. It signifies spring is here much like the tv weathercasters reassurances of "we're only interrupting commercial time".

Here's hoping I don't see any of my peeps on the news in the morning digging through their destroyed homes and describing how it "sounded like a freight train," etc.

Fox had a "heads up" crawl going last night telling when they'd be running tonight's "American Idol" again.

Here's a good example of a textbook rule of thumb playing out.. follow the streak of dust from behind the dryline to where the line from the dust (usually associated with the strongest winds) intersects the dryline. This is where the best forcing will take place, and a strong thunderstorm is most likely to develop.

related: there is a ****load of dust in the air behind that line of storms developing and we're all going to be living in a desert soon.
