Keeps showing up in pics from practice. I know he was in Norman prior to the bowl game also. Did I miss something? Anyone with info?

He may be super sized but he sure can coach a great o-line. Wouldn't hurt my feelings if he were to draw a Sooner paycheck again.

i wouldn't necessarily say he coached a GREAT OL; but the guy clearly knows a thing or two to have taken KANSAS of all schools to an ORANGE BOWL.
Think about that for a moment. That'd be like someone taking OSU pre-Booned to the Orange Bowl.

Is Stoops losing confidence in Patton? I mean he's the only OL coach I've ever heard of that doesn't coach ya know... the entire OL. Now he's got Mangino looking over his shoulder. I also thought it was telling that Wilson didn't take him with him to IU since he was his protege and all.

I think Mangino is just trying to stay visible in the sport. And Patton may have been offered a job at Indiana but turned it down because he makes more here. And I'm not going to search thru old threads, but other examples of OL duties being split were given right after Kittle was hired.

Remember when his appearance in Norman was proof that KW was in over his head and needed "tutoring" in how to run an offense? Good times.

I think Mangino did one fantastic job of assembling an O-Line from scratch that made Heupel and Quentin Griffin's highlight reels possible. Since his time, we've been able to recruit much bigger names, but constantly have the O-line being called our weak area.

Agreed. Good for him.

I've always said, during the Stoops years, the one coach who I was glad to see leave at the time, and later felt I was wrong, was Mangino. I'd be very happy if Stoops brought him back.

So my question is: Is he allowed to be hanging around helping to coach? I thought we were only allowed to have so many coaches? I'm sure I'm wrong, otherwise he wouldnt be out there, but just wanted someone to do some 'splainin...

He can be there in a consulting role, but he can't actively coach players.

Looks like a hint to me....would love to have Mangino back in any capacity....he can flat out coach....

Scott Sutton's bro Sean is hanging around ORU but isn't officially on the coaching staff. I think the rules in college basketball and college football are similar, in that Sean can sit and observe and watch game film, but cannot give instruction to players.

My guess is that Mangino is doing something similar, in that you won't see him pull a guy aside and tell him to lead with his left foot or lower his shoulder or finger poke him in the chest go home to your homies  or anything, but just observe practice and report back to Stoops.

His guys would be able to punch it in from the goal line on four tries, that's for sure.

I'm glad Mangino is back on the practice field in Norman. Our offense changed immediately when he arrived on the scene last year and Sooner players don't cry about being yelled at. He's a good coach. I wouldn't mind if he was back on the payroll frankly.

There were very, VERY few people saying that in 2001.

That's true but I was talking about him more as an OL coach, not OC.

This is after the Spring game. Look at the top of the group standing at the 50, dressed in black! He was on the sidelines the entire game.

I saw him at the game and thought it was very apparent that he lost weight. Congrats, coach!

Seeing him wear all-black, I wondered if it was a diet technique to sweat the pounds off, standing there in that full sunlight with black clothes
