H2OU is my guess for the "free water" :D

I remember they had the Jeffathon outdoors... the weather didn't suck, but I think it would have been better in an arena. :)

badger
4/4/2011, 03:30 PM
Lon: With Coach Capel, he lost a lot after a few years, that would throw a wrench in anyone's plans. The guys who are here are very young, we hope to be the beneficiary of their development and their maturing. That kind of all hit Coach Capel at the same time, being young. We hope going forward, it's late, but anyone that's available out there we're going to check out

This excites me. I might have to catch an open practice in addition to a game

Lon: We are always going to recruit the best players. If we get a one and done that's great.

wtf???? did he mean to say that?!

Lon: You want players to get a college degree and have a base academically that they can come back and get it when their playing days are over... we're very flexible. We told our guys last night, first and foremost we have to communicate. If you have a problem, we're very transparent, we're not trying to catch you, we're trying to help you but we need to talk to you. We're constructive with it...

badger
4/4/2011, 03:38 PM
Lon: We have to rep first class in every way. Be conscious in repping in a first class way and always be on time, we're not going to wait on me, not make anyone else wait on us. We want them to be able to go out and compete successfully. It's all about the long range vision and focus To do that you have to take care of habits lately

badger
4/4/2011, 03:39 PM
sez it's his and his wife's last stop... planned to be at least :)

Lon: We're very much about the midwest as much as we enjoyed our time in Las Vegas. I'm very familiar with the Big 12, have trouble not saying Big 8.

Lon on how long he'll go: I certainly expect to do this as long as Sooner fans will have us and we look forward to it.

badger
4/4/2011, 03:41 PM
Lon: I liked the buzz today, the enthusiasm, the students coming out. We have to work toward having a good home court advantage. The students are at the cornerstone of that. It creates a standard. It's a shared ownership we're a small part of it. It's about the players, it's a lot easier to do what I'm doing. I think we sometimes take that for granted

badger
4/4/2011, 03:42 PM

badger
4/4/2011, 03:44 PM
Lon on players: Really tough position. They really liked Coach Capel I like Coach Capel and it's tough the posiiton he was in and it's tough for them. Last night, I really liked their approach, their eagerness to get started, to get out there and get after them.

Talked to Robert Goff this morning

badger
4/4/2011, 03:47 PM
Berry Tramel is asking about being called Lonnie. wtf...

Lon: Anyone that runs a business that runs an organization they're after the same things we're after, helping our students, employees coworkers do the best they can. The challenge is to create an atmosphere that players want to be around. It occurs after time, do players come early stay late, we've created an atmosphere where they want to be there, want to be a part of what we're doing. After time, they understand they're at the center of everything. We're going to win games b/c we have players that are playing better on any given night than the opponent, that's what we're after, but it takes time.

badger
4/4/2011, 03:48 PM
Lon: We're looking forward to seeing these guys for the first time tomorrow. I like what people say about intangibles, I like the fact that they're young and going to improve a year more experienced next season. I know we are going to line up and play as hard as we can, as well as we can and I expect us to win games, I don't know how many.

Now talking about NCAA investigation.

I don't think that's feasible. It would have been at one time, about five years ago, before that tech center went up next to Price Hall, but now there's probably not enough room.

However, I could see them doing fan events or early non-conference games at the Fieldhouse. That would be megafun, especially connected with football weekends. :D

We are playing off the Center of Campus Comment Joe made though.

I'd like to think they could do it but seeing the parking lot of Lloyd Noble from the Satellite Google map image really would require it to include a huge parking lot/BLDG that could benefit Football and Basketball and other events. Just close off Jenkins and you will have plenty of room! Could they build an arena where the athletic dorms are at including the parking lot when the new dorm gets built. What is planned for the old dorms they took out on Lyndsey across from the Duck Pond?

Remember with the new athletic/student dorm across from the current dorm, something has to be done with that dorm -- parking garage? That would go with a new arena. Remember they also moved the fire station that was next to the indoor football practice facility. Add on to the Everett Training Center with two basketball practice centers.

Spoiled Grapes IMO. Jeff...I think he was a good Coach. Not Great but good. We gave him a shot. I originally thought he might be a guy that could tap into some of the East Coast Talent and bring a great Player here and then maybe pick up a Great Mid West Player too. He didn't and on top of that...he started losing. I just think he would have done better at a smaller East Coast School and taken a bit more time working his way up the ladder and getting the experience in the Mid west under a successful Coach out her instead of taking the OU job. It didn't work out and we went shopping for a
Coach. If we did anything wrong it was that we didn't let Jeff go sooner and now we are really pushed to recruit any player before signing day. That's Joe C's fault IMO and not Lon's. I would imagine it was one of the reason's Lon might have been hesitant to come at first possibly.

I think you should think about continuing to support Lon and the team. He made a commitment to help us turn things around and I believe he's going to really try to get us on the map again.

@Yankee:

And you called me Jenni Carlson?

You post layout is similar to her writing. ;)

I've actually agreed with most of what you've said regarding the coaching situation, just not at all with the cutting of players.

Just close off Jenkins and you will have plenty of room! Could they build an arena where the athletic dorms are at including the parking lot when the new dorm gets built. What is planned for the old dorms they took out on Lyndsey across from the Duck Pond?

Eh, Jenkins is a pretty busy north-south street. Unless they rerouted it east, I think that would cause more problems than solve.

Remember with the new athletic/student dorm across from the current dorm, something has to be done with that dorm -- parking garage? That would go with a new arena. Remember they also moved the fire station that was next to the indoor football practice facility. Add on to the Everett Training Center with two basketball practice centers.

I don't think there would be enough room with the IPF right there. They have never said what's going in those old dorms place though.

If you guys remember, Joe was really emphasizing the field house and center of campus at the beginning of the press conference. It seemed like more than a coincidence.

We've been needing a smaller venue. Easier to fill, etc, etc, etc...

What about the Duck Pond Parking lot? Could you see a garage being put where the fieldhouse is and DPPL becoming a new facility?

I think the current location of Oklahoma Memorial Stadium would be an ideal spot for a basketball arena.

When Joe C said we need to start from the center of campus he wasn't talking about building a new arena, he was talking about student and alumni involvement in the basketball program.

They spent 17 million in 2001 to build the new practice facilities. Here's pics if you've never seen them.

They're damn nice and no one who wants to keep their job or run a successful business would throw them away to move the arena a few blocks north.

Joe did say they would consider 'everything'. By this I assume he is referring to his $100 million project where they gut the inside of LNC and completely rebuild the concourse and floor to have a steeper angle and a more traditional basketball configuration. Something that will be an easier sell to donors once we start winning again.

Everyone would love to have a new arena near the center of campus. The hard reality is the costs to do so and the waste in investment simply rule it out. The LNC is here to stay for a very long time. It's up to all of us to make it home.

Students are not filling up their area for most football games either the last year. Then they leave in the 3rd quarter or before. They cannot say that is because they are not winning!

Stick the students in the endzone. THEN you'd see a full student section. As it is now, they crowd as close at they can to the 50 yards line and the seats in the endzone part of the section aren't full. If it was endzone seating, no need to crowd to one side. The section would be spread out and it would look full even with hundreds less in attendance than capacity. Call it the "Boone Pickens Stadium stigma" :D
