Emails and tattoos and lies, oh my. As many of those who defended the coach suspected (myself included), he did indeed forward the emails. The problem is, he didn’t forward them to anyone at Ohio State.

Until recently, Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel had been given the benefit of the doubt (mostly) by the majority of loyal Buckeye fans. The general thinking inside the Horseshoe was that outsiders who despise Ohio State for its on-field success this past decade under Tressel were on some fruitless witch hunt.

By now, everyone knows the background: several Ohio State players were suspended for the first five games of the 2011 season for selling awards and other personal items for cash and/or discounted or free tattoos.

However, in the last couple of weeks it came to light that coach Tressel had been notified via email in April of 2010 of these goings-on by an outside source, but did not come forward with the information. Tressel claimed that the individual the players were associating with was under investigation by the Federal Government, and that coming forward could jeopardize that investigation, as well as potentially endanger the players involved.

The coach received additional emails from this same source requesting 100% confidentiality, to which he stated he complied, and this was his reasoning for not divulging the info to his boss, A.D. Gene Smith, or Doug Archie, head of the OSU compliance department.

At the press conference OSU held after the story of the emails appeared on Yahoo Sports, Tressel was asked if he forwarded the emails to anyone. It appeared as though the coach said yes before being cut off by Smith, who said there would be no comments on issues regarding the emails as they were part of the pending NCAA investigation.

Fast forward to Friday, March 25th.

As many of those who defended the coach (myself included) and his explanation/reasoning for his actions suspected, he did indeed forward the emails. The problem is, he didn’t forward them to anyone at Ohio State.

Instead, he forwarded them to one Ted Sarniak, a businessman from Terrelle Pryor's hometown of Jeannette, Pa., who Pryor has known for years - in the hope Sarniak could counsel Pryor about the seriousness of the situation.

That's all well and good, but if these emails were going to be forwarded, they certainly also needed to be sent to Smith and/or Archie, not (just) Sarniak.

The recent events at Tennessee involving its basketball program and ultimate dismissal of its head coach Bruce Pearl, who admitted that he lied to NCAA investigators, suggest the NCAA will almost certainly levy further sanctions against coach Tressel and the University.

Given the current circumstances, OSU may have no choice but to seriously consider firing Tressel for cause. Lying to Smith, the compliance department, and the NCAA are major violations. They are inexcusable, even through the best pair of Scarlet-and-Gray glasses.

Nevertheless, there remains a large camp of Buckeye faithful who believe Tressel’s on-field leadership and immense success should be the saving grace that keeps him employed, unlike Pearl.

It is difficult to ignore that Tressel's Buckeye teams have won seven Big Ten titles, one BCS National title, and of course, own a 9-1 mark against that team to the north, that after the 2-10-1 John Cooper years. This doesn't hurt his cause.

But to be clear, while the free or discounted tattoos and the selling of the memorabilia by the players are fairly serious violations, they pale in comparison to the actions of Tressel after the fact.

It now seems clear that Tressel presumed nobody would find out about the situation or blow the whistle, and him sending the emails to what some have called Pryor's "mentor" was an attempt to nip the problem in the bud, rather than to address it and suspend his star QB.

And now the plot takes a new twist… Rumors and speculation that former University of Florida coach Urban Meyer knew this was coming and left the Gators so that he could take over in Columbus have been swirling ever since the Orlando Sentinel ran a story firmly suggesting this would happen.

It’s very possible there is no truth to this speculation. However, Meyer is from Ohio and in the mid-1980's spent two years as a graduate assistant on Earle Bruce’s staff. So it IS possible Meyer would be interested, regardless whether he had early-intel of the soon-to-be publicized Tressel revelations.

At this point, nothing is certain other than that Tressel is in water hot enough to boil a lobster to a slow, agonizing, and screechy death. Could that same fate be in store for Tressel at OSU? Are his days patrolling the Horseshoe in his famous sweater vest nearing their end?

Woody Hayes was fired at Ohio State for letting his emotions get the best of him when he struck an opposing player after an interception, and if you can fire Woody Hayes, surely Jim Tressel is not precluded from getting axed.

Woody was a character and may have done some off-the-wall things in his day, especially when it came to his preparation and disdain for Michigan, but he was never accused of being a liar and a cheater.

Practically every Buckeye football fan wanted to forever live by the motto, "In Tressel We Trust", and they had every reason to believe they always could -- until this.

Now the trust they once had is all but dead, and the man who was well on his way to replacing the still iconic Hayes (despite his transgression) as the greatest coach in Buckeye history could instead be on his way out of Columbus

Tressel may or may not get the axe and even Meyer could end up there, but I think its a joke to suggest Meyer knew this was coming and was setting up for it. Did he think that the first time he "retired"? I also don't understand why a coach would leave Florida for tOSU. Both great football schools but seems overall (location, recruiting, etc.) would favor Fla. I'm sure there is immense pressure at Florida but I'd guess not nearly what would be at tOSU.

Besides, why would he leave a job like Florida for a job like tOSU when he had no way of knowing for sure that this would all come out and cost Tressel his job?

Nothing to see here.

Do you really think OSU wants Meyer after what he did to them in 2007?

Me thinks there are still hard feelings towards him in Columbus.

We got a reduction in schollies and the players were ineligible for a year. That was with us reporting everything as soon as we found out.

Tressel hid it, and they get a few games off with no scholly reduction? Bull****.

I think I see a two year coaching ban if he somehow keeps his job. We might even see some sort of postseason ban since these violations occured within 5 years of the Jim O' Brian recruiting violations, so they would be hit with the repeat violator clause where severe sanctions could be levied against not only Tressel but Ohio St.

tOSU is going to dump sweater vest to save their program. Sorry Jimmy, we know you got us that miracle title in 2002 that everyone predicted Miami would easily win, but you got it with a player that tried to rock the boat on the NFL early departure rules. Sure you beat hated rival Michigan so much that it's a wonder as to how they're the winningest program in college football history, but then you remember that Michigan loses to everyone these days.

Goodbye, Jim Tressel. Maybe you can get the OU job (Ohio University, that is) and build your reputation from scratch. Or, retire with the millions that tOSU's paid you annually.

Best bet? Resign and avoid the humiliation of being fired. However, tOSU might not want that --- have to show the NCAA that they're taking drastic action to curtail rules infractions.

:D Oh how I LOVE when the NCAA problems are SOMEONE ELSE's PROBLEMS!!!!! :D

I would take the few down years anyway. 4 National Championships at Youngstown State. 8 ten win seasons in ten years at Ohio State and a 384726-1 record against Michigan it seems. 3 National Championship Appearances with 1 win, and complete domination of the Big 10 since he arrived. I will sure as hell pay with some down time for a future dynasty

Didn't his book emphasize faith and integrity? Meh, it reminds me of Bill Bennett writing his Book of Virtues, and then gambling away millions at the casinos. I think in all likelihood OSU will have all of its regular season games vacated, and the Sugar Bowl will be taken too. Two or three years of probation is also likely. I am not sure Tressel can survive this. He might want to consider announcing his retirement, and then waiting for the smoke to blow over, and then return to football in some capacity somewhere else.

Don't give sweater vest too much credit now. Think of all of the tOSU alums that are in the NFL. It seems like every NFL team has at least one. So, he had talent stockpiled. Then, there's the budget thing. Biggest athletic department budget in the nation, bigger than Texas, if I'm not mistaken. The facilities... 100k stadium, the rest just as big and grandiose. The tradition... the most Heismans of any program, even before the Tressel era, a huge fanbase of people begging tOSU to take their money for the sake of football, the script Ohio band thingie...

I would not be surprised to see another coach waltz in after Tressel and pick up things where he left off wins-wise and championship-wise. tOSU owns the Big Ten. Hope you are still used to being owned and operated by a bigger athletic budget school, Nebrasky

1. If a lot of players go on to play in the NFL, doesn't that also speak well of a coaches ability to develop players?

2. Of course he has talent stockpiled and a vast amount of resources. Didn't also the rather underwhelming John Cooper in the 90's? What about Rich Rod and Lloyd Car at Michigan or every single coach at Notre Dame for the last 60 years except for Lou Holtz? You can have a vast amount of resources and fail if you do not know what you are doing. Remember that Tressel took over a OSU team that had underachieved the past couple of years. Also don't forget that Tressel took over a horrible Youngstown State team and made them a dynasty in the 90's.

Tressel is inarguably a top five coach in the country today.

If the NCAA hits him with sanctions, he'll likely have a show-cuase order against him, meaning that any other school that wants to hire him must "show cause" as to why he should be allowed to coach at the NCAA level.

The Notice of Violation which was served today requires a response by tOSU within 90 days. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for August 12. Helluva time not to be concentrating on getting ready for football IMO.

The timing of the NCAA decision will decide whether Tressel coaches another game at tOSU. He has already said he will not coach the first 5 games which pretty muchly gets you up to October. If the NCAA hammers the coach and/or school by that time, he is done.

Covering up a trophies for tattoos scandal is nothing compared to signing a player, having the player move it and prepare to spend the next four years of his life at that university, and then having the carpet ripped out from under him as the SEC has been accused of doing the last several years.

I don't think they will fire him...but what they are getting Tressel for is lying to the NCAA...much like what Dez Bryant got in trouble for.....yet a lot worse!

The guy knew of ineligible players, signed a paper for the NCAA Compliance stating that he didn't know of any, and yet played them anyway.

The NCAA is not much better...the NCAA allowed the same players to play in the bowl game.

Tressel will get slapped hard by the NCAA...OSU will likely lose all wins last season...and probation could be coming.

I agree with the interest part. But it's not a positive thing for CFB in general for successful programs to be bending the rules. I'm not implying it's better if they don't get caught - it's better if teams adhere to the rules. Our success has no meaning outside the context of the competition.
