According to data from the Oklahoma Mesonet, the previous 120-day span (November 24, 2010-March 23, 2011) is the driest such period on record for central and southwestern Oklahoma. The average rainfall recorded in central Oklahoma over that period stands at 2.42 inches, 5.88 inches below normal.
Precipitation totals are running less than 40 percent of normal for the western one-half of the state, worsening to less than 20 percent of normal for southwestern and parts of central Oklahoma. The statewide average of 3.45 inches for the last 120 days ranks as the third driest such period on record. These statistics, along with growing reports of crop failures and dismal pasture conditions, has prompted the U.S. Drought Monitor to expand the "extreme drought" (D3) designation from southwestern Oklahoma up through Oklahoma County. No, "we" won't be fine. I will be fine since I have a full year's crop of hay still put back, but the average year-to-year Okie is ****ed if we don't get some rain.

One more week in DC, then I'm coming home. I'm gonna send a shower this weekend, and maybe more to follow. Please, Lord, let it rain...

The Marina at Thunderbird is getting ready to re-open after being rebuilt from its tornado destruction...except the water levels are getting so low, many sailboats won't be able to use it yet.

The average year-to-year Okie? What average demographic are you talking about? I'm assuming yours?

Thunderbird: March 20. Elevation 2 3/4 ft. below normal, water clear.
Wes Watkins: March 21. Elevation 4 ft. below normal, water 63 and clear.

If you have hay put back, and no more cattle, are you sitting on a potential price premium for your supply, or will you hold it back to help out the neighbors?

(I'm guessing I know this answer already.)

We had a similar situation in Atlanta a few years back. Lake Lanier was becoming bone dry and water restrictions were the norm.

It sucks but it will pass (hopefully for you guys).

Start hoarding some scotch or whiskey, not much else will keep long term. Well it'll keep but it won't improve.

Well now we have shelter belts and follow better agricultural practices. Our economy is also not as highly dependent on agriculture.

Nobody whose livelihood depended on agriculture would wish those conditions to exist again.

Not sure if it has been said...but if we do have another Dust Bowl, it will not be like it was in the 1930s.

Thanks to the US Government, farmers now know how to cultivate the lands.

I remember back in the 1990s we have some dust storms...they sucked balls, but they were no where near what they had back in the 1930s.

I'm going to need to know which party supports this idea before I decide whether or not I believe it. ;)

Seriously, though. My mom was a baby during the "dirty thirties" as they were called. She lived in SW Kansas not all that far from where that picture was taken in Beaver, OK. My grandmother said they'd have all the doors and windows shut and a wet cloth draped over my mother's crib and in not time at all it would be complete mud. Now that I think about it, why the hell did she use a wet cloth?

Someone throw me a tube or a wake board, it'll be much easier to navigate our streets here....if Tahlequah so much as gets a shower around NSU the streets flood.

Funny thing is our apartment has a pseudo stormwater retention pond that overflows into the nearby creeks, well that has overflowed into our parking lot. Yeah, that was some brilliant thinking right thar.

I tossed the dice last week and came up a winnah!!

I spent all afternoon last Thursday and Friday spreading urea on the pastures. At $475 a ton it was a real gamble.

On Friday night, right when the fertilizer buggy was running out I got a couple drops on my arm. Just south of me was a giant black wall. I got the tractor/buggy into the barn, walked to the house, and got in the shower. I got out and looked out the window and there was some light rain going on. About a half-hour later, it came a bunch of rain/hail and it probably dropped 2+inches. It rained most of the day Saturday, and all day Sunday. My rain gauge is broke, but I know we had to have at least 4+ inches. The grass has turned emerald green, and it's already grown over an inch since Friday. I got about half the Deanarosa done, and hope to get the rest done this week sometime - if it'll quit raining...

You put your anhydrous down a month or two ago didn't you?

I only farm grass hay. Once the sprigging is done, you're good for a lot of years - as long as you keep on top of the soil condition and bust up the ground every 5 years or so. I know some guys who do the whole roundup/paraquat thing on their grass pastures, but I've never seen the point. Good luck on your milo. You growing it for feed?

Again Norman gets a trace. 1/4 inch is insignificant, but the map shows how it has been now for 2 years. Inch all around but here. Norman has become a big rain shield and the drought centers over the town like a bullseye.
