NORMAN, Okla. – The Oklahoma men’s golf team fired a final-round 272 (-16) Saturday to claim first place at the 15-team Desert Shootout at the par-72 Palm Valley Golf Course in Goodyear, Ariz. The Sooners 22-stroke victory was fueled by tournament champion Abraham Ancer, who shot a program record 54-hole score of 195 (-21), shattering the previous record of 203 set by Anthony Kim in 2005.

Ancer and teammate Will Kropp, who finished in second place, both shot program-low round scores of 63 (-9). The Sooner pair was joined by Eduardo Castiello and Ryan Sirman in the tournament’s top six. All six competing OU golfers finished in the field’s top 20.

“I’m incredibly proud of the team,” said OU head coach Ryan Hybl. “The boys played dominant. Abe (Ancer) was just a dominant force to reckoned with. Will Kropp, who was competing for us as an individual, finished in second. I think that just shows the depth of our lineup.”

The Sooners’ 54-hole total of 816 (-48) was one stroke shy of the school record for lowest tournament score. The tournament title was Oklahoma’s first of the season.

After the Sooners remarkable performance, Hybl’s squad dedicated their Desert Shootout victory to the memory of Kyle Lewis.

“One thing we wanted to do with this victory is dedicate it to the family of Kyle Lewis,” said Hybl. “He was in our thoughts today. This is a big win for us.”

Lewis, a senior last year at Bethel (Okla.) High School who signed a letter of intent to play for the Oklahoma men's golf team starting last fall, died in an automobile accident this past July while returning from the All-State golf tournament in Broken Arrow.

Ancer’s dominant performance placed him six strokes ahead of second-place Kropp, who was competing in the event as an individual. Due to his individual status, his career-low three-round total of 201 (-15) was not included in the Sooners’ total score. The sophomore finished two strokes ahead of BYU’s Zachary Blair.

Castiello, a freshman from Guadalajara, Mexico, tied for fourth place with a career-low 206 (-10) and Sirman, a senior from Tyler, Texas, carded a career-low 207 (-9) to tie for sixth.

Junior Riley Pumphrey fired a 210 (-6) to tie for 13th place. The Georgetown, Texas, native has shot below 212 in his past three straight tournaments.

Freshman Michael Schoolcraft finished in a tie for 19th place after tying a career-best 212 (-4).

The Sooners, ranked No. 32 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings placed ahead of ranked opponents No. 31 North Texas and No. 41 TCU.

Oklahoma takes the course next when it heads to Laredo, Texas, March 25-26 for the Border Olympics.
