I really like my old Canon Elph, but it's outdated...I'd like to have a new small camera that maybe has GPS & more than 5X zoom, touchscreen....

any recommendations? one of my favorite features about the elph is that it has a battery that lasts forever...i think the most I want to spend is about $400.

I had the Panasonic Lumix recommended by the New Yawkah and a couple others and I bought one for momma a couple years ago. It works real well.

Spend the extra $200 and buy yourself a Nikon D3100. It's an incredible camera for the money.

Edit: I just noticed you said small camera. Nevermind!.

This has been a good camera for me, also shoots HD.
Downside is the flash has to be opened manually(which isn't a bad thing in some cases)and the battery life is not the best but it takes amazing photos.

Go DSLR if you can swing it, no comparisons.

Had a Lumix, great looking camera that takes really good HD video. However, the photos are hit or miss. Not worth the pricetag IMO. Sold it on ebay.

Can't go wrong with the Canon line. Just depends if you want to shoot video as well?

Agree 100% on the DSLR recommendation. You'll get better pictures from a 5 MP DSLR than a 15 MP point and shoot. I prefer Nokia to Canon, personally.

Just an FYI, if any of you print pictures at home, you may want to stock up on your printer ink catridges. Unless you have an HP printer, the cartridges come from Japan. And it is anticipated that that is going to be a shortage. (duh)

I agree with Thunder. Canon is my favorite camera, primarily because the glass (lens) is considered the best. Generally Canon is used to action shots, Nikon for portraits. But both are good.

I have a Nikon D3000, I have figured out that I just don't carry it around like I did a smaller camera. It requires some commitment to carry around a DSLR instead of a point-and-shoot. I found a Nikon S80 compact P-N-S at Newegg on sale for $150 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830113282), that way my wife got a smaller compact camera and I took over her Nikon L22 compact camera to use as an easy carry camera. I use the D3000 for things that I need a better shot of but the P-N-S makes it easier to use...a DSLR is worthless if you aren't going to use it.

It can be quite intimidating to learn to use the shutter speeds, lighting, and when to and when NOT to use the flash...the manual can be your best friend IF you take the time to read it. My biggest phobia was that I would change a setting and the camera would be practically worthless but you can reset it to its default settings if you think you have gone too far and want to turn back.

The biggest thing to do is, read the manual, learn each setting ONE at a time...use it then move onto the next setting. Soon you will thank yourself for buying an advanced type of camera such as these.

They're selling you something.

Zeiss is the best glass out there. period. I can also name about 15 DPs that would say the same. Even saying that Canon is better than Nikon unequivocally is untrue, as Most Nikon primes/macros and wide zooms are better than Canons. The place where Canon leads is zooms and that is too close to call.

I work with professionals. Some of the first people that I worked with in NYC-

got to play with my new camera a lot last week, and it takes rilly rilly good pictures, and the HD movies are fantastic! the GPS thing is really cool, too, it shows pretty closely where the picture was taken and it can be adjusted slightly. would be great for traveling so you could pinpoint where you've been. We used to print them and even bought some high end color printer/fax/scanner/baby incubator but we'd only sporadically print pictures and one or more of the multiple color cartridges would dry out. We'd buy a whole new set and print pics...and a couple months later go to print and have more dried out cartridges.

I just started batch emailing them to a local drug store...and picking them up the next day. Saved me the hassle.

I went to a color laser printer, a Samsung CLP-315W (http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/printers/CLP-315W/XAA) on sale at Fry's for $150. I have had it a year and haven't had to replace toner cartridges yet and have run through a bunch of reams of paper. My 11x17 printer (HP OfficeJet 7000 (http://www.shopping.hp.com/product/printer/Officejet/1/storefronts/C9299A%2523B1H)) is an inkjet and I have to replace cartridges a couple of times a year and I don't use it near as much. I wanted an 11x17 color laser to replace my DeskJet 9650 that HP decided not to update drivers for. I got the OfficeJet 7000 on sale for $160 (much cheaper than the $400 I paid for the 9650 in 2004), the cheapest 11x17 color laser was close to $2,000 at the time. If I am going to spend close to that I am going to buy a used/refurb 30" wide inkjet plotter so I can do full size sheets.
