Word origin tip of the day: Mortgage (n); from the Latin for "death agreement"; literally meaning that if A loans B money to buy a house, and B dies before paying off the note, A gets the house. Modernly, if B either dies or fails to pay the note by a date certain, A gets the house and a judgment for the balance due on the note. That is all.
