This man played before my time but those who came before us helped to make OU football what it is today.

Lindell Pearson, a star halfback on Bud Wilkinson's great 1949 Sooner football team and the subject of one of OU's earliest recruiting controversies, died last week. He was 82.

Services are at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 127 N.W. Seventh St. in Oklahoma City.

Pearson was a star athlete at Oklahoma City Capitol Hill High School in the 1940s. He enrolled at the University of Arkansas in 1947 but a few weeks later was "recovered by a swift counter-raid," OU historian Harold Keith wrote.

Pearson played a key role in some epic Sooner games.
