A friend of a friend offered to sell me a whole cow for $500. He said it weighs about 750 lbs. I don't know if its a cow or a steer or a bull. I don't know what breed it is. I have a pretty good idea of what it will cost to slaughter and process it. Just wondering if thats a good price just to buy it. Thanks

Less than 70 cent a Lb . Not sure of the waste factor but even if it at 50% thats a buck 40 a lb . Hell hamburger is well over 3 bucks a lb
Id do it if I wanted that much meat on hand

If its 750 pounds for 500 dollars is either a badly malnourished worn out cow, or a grossly overweight sheep. A 750lb feeder calf would bring around 900-1000 in open market right now. But a 750lb isn't anywhere in the neighborhood of finished. So you would either be getting completely ripped off, or a gift if you would actually get a legit calf for that price.

A carcass usually dresses out around 60-65%. So fats will sell for 1.14 on the hoof, or 1.75-1.80 on the hook. A wore out cow should still be about 400lb heavier than 750 though. And okay hamburger is all you could hope for out of that, unless your big into tripe and sweetbreads.

Oh yeah...........I think it has a messed up hoof or something and thats why he is selling early and cheap.

That is so gross....I only eat burgers ground from Kobe or Organic Beef Eye of Round. Anything else is just Neanderthal.

So if the cow weighs 750 lbs. and I get approx. 60% of that after slaughter, I would have 450 lbs. dressed weight or hanging weight, right?

Then I should get about 60% of the 450 lbs. dressed weight or 270 lbs. after processing right?

I paid $500.00 for the animal
$40.00 for slaughter
$274.50 for processing (.61 processing fee X 450 lbs. dressed weight)
$814.50 Total for 270 lbs. or $3.02 per pound.

And I'm sure some cuts will be extra. Does that sound about right?

Kind of expensive to me. I'd have just gone with fresh roadkill unless you paid to have it fed.

The thing you have to remember is that this isn't not a finished animal, so the meat won't be fully developed like you would expect on many of the cuts.

Listen to royalfan. If you don't have the property/facilities to finish this "creature" then I wouldn't do it. Also, you really need to know what breed/sex the dang thing is, and how old it is.

If I'm going to butcher an animal it is usually one who has some type of infirmity or injury that makes them not attractive at the sale barn. The last calf was a heifer who broke her leg trying to get away from a bull who was trying to breed her. I penned her, fed her out to about 1,100 lbs and had some outstanding beef. She was a x-bred angus/brangus.

750 lbs is way to light to butcher - especially if it's an older cow or bull. Dang thing is probably sick or something.

He said he wasn't sure what it was . . . 750 lbs isn't a small heifer or steer depending on how old it is and what breed it is.

I've seen some stubby legged black angus cows not much bigger than 800 lbs.

Of course like Dean said . . . there's no point in butchering something that small.

This talk about slaughtering cows and roadkill reminds me of living out on the Navajo and how folks would hit a cow and then immediately get out and start cutting the thing up.
