Alaska?

This is not a limited wave shot from the cameras. It was a Heli several thousand feet up in the air and looking up the coast and you just see wave after wave racing in and slamming the coast. Incredible.

Japan has top notch building standards and apparently it happened in the afternoon and folks began heading to high ground right after the shaking stopped. If this would have been in a 3rd world country, it would have been massively devastating.

I'm no expert, but I can only imagine this having a significant impact, only because Japan is such an economic powerhouse. This has brought Japan to its knees.

That nuclear reactor in the disaster zone is of particular concern, they apparently got it shut down, but it's not cooling properly. Also the US base in Southern Japan is on lock down, I have a buddy there, he said they were having a Tsunami party.

But didn't Obama said the US is ready to assist? I'll tell you, the pictures on CNN and Fox News are nothing to scoff at

Thanks for the well-wishes everyone.

I never had to bail to higher ground. No wall of water, just the tide lowering to dramatic levels exposing reef, and then the tide would come back. This has happened about 20 times so far.

The Tsunami Warning on Oahu, Hawaii has now been downgraded to an Advisory to stay out of the water. People can now return to the flood evacuation areas.

Reported that in Kahalui, Maui there was an 8 foot wave followed by a 7 foot surge that went 1/3 mile inland.

5-0 checkin; in.

Thanks for the well-wishes everyone.

I never had to bail to higher ground. No wall of water, just the tide lowering to dramatic levels exposing reef, and then the tide would come back. This has happened about 20 times so far.

The All Clear hasn't sounded as there were many aftershocks from the quake. I think we were very lucky especially compared to Japan.

Anyone heard from KantoSooner? Is he still over there? How about Chuck? I don't know if he'd be affected by the tsunamis... Any others I'm forgetting?

I'm fine. Bangkok is not affected much by Pacific coast tsunamis because of geographic physicality, which tends to radiate east. Bangkok is very lucky as Cambodia tends to shield it from tsunamis and typhoons. And, Bangkok is far enough away from the "ring of fire" that it doesn't have earthquakes and only feels a slight tremor very rarely when there is a major earthquake in Burma.

Now, penisular southern Thailand is a different story, either on the Pacific ocean side or the Indian ocean side.

Narita Airport...

Heather Powell, the wife of Limerick Patch editor David Powell, was preparing to travel home from a business trip to Tokyo when an earthquake of magnitude 8.9 struck off the Japanese coast. She provided the following account via telephone while stranded with colleagues at Narita Airport outside Tokyo.

"We arrived at (Narita Airport) at about 2:30 p.m. (Tokyo time, 12:30 a.m. EST).

"We walked in; there was no line. We checked in (quickly)."

As the group waited for the rest of its members to check in, the quake struck. Powell said a colleague who had previously experienced earthquakes was the first to realize what was happening.

"I heard the noise before I felt the shaking. It was just this rumbling. It knocked you off your feet a little bit. We stood there for a minute until the worst of it passed. Then, the (airport counter staff) and airport police started yelling for people to get out of the building.

"We saw people bolting for the doors. You could hear the glass windows of the front of the terminal rattling," Powell said.

"They wanted people away from the glass canopies and away from the building. They wanted us to walk all the way down the ramp to the parking lot."

"After an hour and a half, it was getting cold, and it was going to rain, so they herded us over to the glass canopy leading into the building, and they allowed us onto the first floor, which they said was secure and safe. But there was damage in other parts of the building, so they wanted us to stay on the first floor."

"Eventually, they started calling people who had either landed or checked in for flights to come get their bags. They were letting people into the baggage claim area to get their bags."

"Then, they came around with bottled water and sleeping bags. They did not have enough sleeping bags for everybody. They told everyone that if they did not have a sleeping bag, they should 'use their outfit' (to sleep on)."

"It was very orderly. There was no fighting. There was no panic."

"They left the doors open on the first floor, so it was freezing in there. They eventually told us they'd secured the rest of the building and allowed us to come upstairs, where it's much warmer."

Powell described airport staff as extremely helpful and accommodating.

"At one point, (a colleague) and I walked to the ladies restroom. There was a line, and an attendant led those of us waiting outside the restroom to the immigrations area, where there was an (unoccupied) bathroom."

Powell said all passengers have been told that they must remain at the airport.

"The roads are closed. There's no way to get in and out [of the airport]."

She said her group was in generally good spirits.

"We're tired and we're cranky, but we're laughing. We're kind of slap happy at this point. We're waiting for the McDonald's to open. The Starbucks was the only thing open, and they were only serving coffee and tea."

Powell said the airport has not lost power during the ordeal, but that she has had limited access to conventional media.

"There are a couple of TVs around showing Japanese language news broadcasts," she said.

Powell said she had mostly been keeping track of events via her Twitter account.

Despite numerous reports of cell phone communication network difficulties, Powell said her group had had relatively little trouble communicating with the outside world.

"AT&T (customers are) fine. The Verizon people can't get anything," Powell said.

During the interview, Powell was interrupted twice by aftershocks, one of which Powell said was measured at magnitude 6.6.

A short time later, the stranded travelers were informed via public address that the first flight announced since the quake, a Lufthansa flight, had been scheduled for 4:10 p.m. Saturday (2:10 a.m. EST).

My FIL got remarried after his Sweetheart died of a Brain Tumor. His new Wife had a Son by a previous marriage. Smart kid....graduated out of TU on a Schollie. He's been living in Japan for a few years but he doesn't stay in touch with his Mom to much. Just got a call he was in Idaho skiing and not in Japan.

Kid is not only smart....he's very lucky.

Don't worry folks! We're on this!

Scientists South of Tulsa Track Huge Quake in Japan

The gauges and monitors went crazy. On duty at the Oklahoma Geological Observatory in Leonard south of Tulsa on Thusday night was research scientist Amie Gibson. She said she was watching something she had never seen before. Gibson said all the seismic readings "capped out". She said the needles showed the earthquake that hit Japan was huge. Gibson said while amazed at the readings she was also sick to realize the numbers meant people were being killed. The quake and resulting tsunami killed hundreds of people and hundreds more remain missing. Gibson pointed out that a few hours after the earthquake in Japan there was a much smaller one in central Oklahoma near the town of Harrah. Recalling a recent earthquake that caused devastation in Chile, Gibson said that was also followed shortly by a quake in Oklahoma that measured 4.4 on the scales. Gibson is now studying these seismic echos and wonders if an earthquake in one part of the world can set off earthquakes on the other side of the Earth. Right now she believes they can.

Nearly 70,000 stranded overnight at Tokyo Disneyland

The massive earthquake that struck Japan on Friday stranded 69,000 people at Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea after damaged roads and transportation interruptions forced visitors to camp overnight in 30-degree temperatures.

While the theme parks experienced some quake damage, there were no reports of any injuries. Disney employees provided blankets, heaters and raincoats to visitors who were required to shelter in place and prohibited from leaving the park because of safety concerns.

Japan Earthquake Predicted To Cause Semiconductor Shortages

The massive 8.9 earthquake that has caused widespread devastation in Japan is expected to cause worldwide shortages and severe price swings in some semiconductors manufactured in the island nation, according to some analysts.

The electronics expected to be most affected by the 8.9 quake that struck Friday include semiconductor wafers used in making microprocessors, NAND flash used for storing music, video, and other content in handheld devices, and DRAM, which is the system memory in PCs. More than 40% of the world's NAND and 15% of the world's DRAM are made in Japan, according to market researcher Objective Analysis

on top of everything else they lost a lot of arable land due to debris and all the chemicals that will settle on the farmland. Obvious more of a long term problem though.

This has been an insane day of watching all of this....

It hard now to tell what's new footage and old. Once all the water dries up and reporters get into the Sendia and see what is left...It'll look like a large Katrina most likely.

Pretty sad as it was evidently prime farmland.

Fox News just announced Japan officials say it is very possible that a nuclear meltdown will happen, however it will not effect humans outside of a 6 mile radius....other than people have no electricity and nuclear waste in the environment and such.

I did some reading up on Chernobyl for fun a couple of years back. It's crazy, the government made so many mistakes. And the people sent in to clean up, the government knew they were ****ed but made em believe they were properly protected.

they're having "after shocks" in japan as bad as the worst quakes in
the US.

i was in North Hollywood for the quake in 1971 & thot it was a terrible thing. (which it was).

it was about a 6.5.
