I've been too torn up about Japan to begin to worry about Oklahoma's fires.

Any chance one of you fine gentlemen can be concerned about both for me?

A friend of mine that is stationed in Japan has posted on his facebook that the Nuclear Reactor #1 is in melt down. He posted that about 13 hours ago.

He said they cannot get it to cool down. This may get a lot uglier really fast!

Based on the info provided on the news, the reactors survived the quake and scrammed as they were designed too. All of these issues stem from the fact their diesel backup generators got knocked offline due to the tsunami.

How in the heck do you operate a nuke plant on the coast and NOT make sure your backups are safe against tsunamis?

Tsunami of prayers for the ones who are in danger and the ones that are sick. Radiation is one of the worst deaths known to man.

What I don't understand is that about 8 years ago they predicted this event and yet they didn't (or haven't) upgrade/d these nuclear generating facilities on their eastern shore to be not tsunami resistant but completely tsunami proof. (it appears from the press reports (if true) that the tsunami & not the initial 'quake knocked out these BU generators/pumps which were supposed to supply the critical coolant to the reactors in an emergency shutdown and it sounds like they built them at ground level right on the freakin' beach).
I don't know much about our 2 reactors in California, but hopefully their backup pumps/generators/ are built so that even the worst tsunami (or quake) wouldn't knock out their ability to provide water to cool them in case of similar event on our west coast (if they're the same design as the ones in Japan).

Earthquake different from predicted 'big one'

Yomiuri Shimbun

The geographic phenomenon responsible for the earthquake in the Tohoku region Monday was different from the phenomenon that a government committee has predicted will cause a major earthquake off Miyagi Prefecture in the near future, according to seismologists.

The government's Earthquake Research Committee has warned that there is a 98 percent chance that a strong earthquake will occur off Miyagi Prefecture in the next 30 years.

The Meteorological Agency said it was possible that Monday's quake may trigger the predicted major quake and called for vigilance.

The epicenter of the quake Monday was 71 kilometers under the sea 20 kilometers off Kesennuma.

As the Pacific tectonic plate under the ocean off Miyagi Prefecture is gradually sinking below the terrestrial plate, seismologists said the tremor likely occurred within the Pacific plate.

The Pacific plate forms a peak that is pushed upward as the bottom of the plate contracts.

In an attempt to return to its original shape, the plate contracts on top and expand underneath.

The agency said that Monday's quake likely was caused by a contraction deep within the upper side of the submerged part of the plate.

The government committee has predicted that a quake off Miyagi Prefecture would be centered about 40 kilometers underground and slightly southeast of the center of the quake that occurred Monday.

The committee predicts that the quake would be caused by movement at the plate boundary, where the Pacific and terrestrial plates meet. The terrestrial plate accumulates distortion while being pulled down by the tectonic movements. When the distortions become large enough, the plate rebounds upward in an attempt to correct them, causing an earthquake.

Major earthquakes of this type have occurred off Miyagi Prefecture about once every 40 years--in 1861, 1897, 1936 and 1978.

The 1978 quake measured 7.4 on the Richter scale. Twenty-eight people died in that quake and about 1,300 were injured.

As 25 years have passed since the previous plate boundary quake in 1978, the distortion in the plate has built up considerably, the seismologists said.

The Meteorological Agency warned that the quake on Monday may trigger a major plate boundary earthquake.

Noritake Nishide, chief of the agency's earthquakes and tsunami section, said, "We'll quickly calculate whether the balance of energy in the plate boundary has been changed by Monday's earthquake and by how much."

That's crazy how you get a couple inches of water coming up by you and in under five minutes it's over 10 feet rushing down the street taking out everything.

I've been looking but can't seem to find it. Anybody know of any videos or at least pictures of the first wave hitting the coast? I know there are several of the tsunami in '04 but you figured a 30 ft wave heading for the coast, somebody would've got it. Just asking.

What you mean you can't find it, put it on cnn. There is new footage there all the time. The most famous one now is the helicopter view. You see it coming up from out at sea and they follow it all the way inland. This type of footage had never been taken ever and is very scientifically important apparently.

I couldn't find the version of that I saw the other day. But it shows from the very beginning, coming on shore. It's from that helicopter though.

Wow...

The energy released was 9.32 teratons of TNT (approximately 600 million times that of the Hiroshima bomb).

We have come a long way since Hiroshima....

Even the ability of nuclear weapons to release radioactivity has been exploited to create different types of weapons. "Clean bombs" are weapons designed to produce as little radioactive fallout as possible. A hydrogen bomb without a uranium jacket would produce relatively little radioactive contamination, for example. A "dirty bomb" could just as easily be built, using materials that contribute to radioactive fallout. Such weapons could also be detonated near Earth's surface to increase the amount of material that could contribute to radioactive fallout. "Neutron" bombs originally designed to be used against Soviet forces in areas of Europe with cultural treasures (art museums, etc.) are able to shower battle fields with deadly neutrons that can penetrate buildings and armored vehicles without destroying them. Any people exposed to the neutrons, however, would die. (Neutron bombs also destroy with blast effects, but their deadly radiation zone extends far beyond their blast area)

One of the many reasons "radiation proof" was a better choice than "unshakeable."

I remember when folks took all that stuff into Haiti and it sat on the tarmac because the Country didn't want to let it in without going through it all.

Wonder how smoothly things will go when your guys get to Narita. Remind them that even though medical marijuana is legal in Cali...they might end up in Japanese Prison like Sir Paul McCarty almost did. :D
