From Tom Dienhart's March 10 "Three and Out"

3. An extra-special Thanksgiving weekend. Nebraska first played Big Eight rival Oklahoma on Thanksgiving -- or the day after -- in the 1960s in what became a classic rivalry. When the Big 12 was hatched in 1996, the Huskers began ending their season against North Division foe Colorado. Now, membership in the Big Ten brings a new season-ending rival: Iowa. It could end up being the best season-ending foe yet for the Huskers. For now, the schools have agreed to meet the Friday after Thanksgiving in each of the next two seasons -- Nov. 25 at Nebraska this season and Nov. 23, 2012, at Iowa. Proximity will fuel the rivalry, as Nebraska and Iowa share a border. But so will strong programs led by talented coaches in Bo Pelini and Kirk Ferentz who are supported by some of the most rabid fan bases in the nation.

I guess it could be - as long as Iowa wins a few national championships and conference championships over the next several years.

Right now? Not so much.

Sounds to me like he's just trying to build something up because only a fool would think Iowa is better that Oklahoma in football.

It would be like us starting a rivalry with Arkansas and claiming it as perhaps better than our rivalry with the Bugeaters.

He's right. In terms of pleasing the fan base an even better season-ending foe would be Northwest Michigan A&M Tech, but they don't play in the Big-10.

When Iowa and Nebraska meet to determine the Big 10 champion for about the 25th time then I'll consider that a possibility.

Here is why it is easy to tell you're young, David. Married couples within shouting distance of 50 don't talk to each other like this. We don't talk. By this point in a relationship, the wife has cut the husband off from sex and achieved access to the credit cards and bank accounts. Probably a separate bedroom if she can swing it. She neither wants nor needs conversation with the husband. She simply needs him to continue earning a paycheck and to stay presentable enough to dress in a tux come the kids' weddings.

The husband has long ago learned that vocal communication is simply a way to accelerate the making of mistakes that will require him to endure literally hours of screeching before he can retreat to his cave and some modicum of peace before he has to get up and go do it all again.

See what you have to look forward to? Go get 'em, Tiger!

Well, maybe the Huskers can be more successful with this rivalry...maybe that is what he means.

This has nothing to do with NC's. The OU & Neb. series was two teams with rich football traditions that respected each other but this is the two flagship universities of their respective pro-teamless states; each with arrogant fans spewing state & university pride; one with a history of football championsips and Heisman winners & another that's tired of hearing about it & wants a taste itself. It's old money versus new money. It's the Cornhuskers of the Cornhusker state going up against the Hawkeyes of the Hawkeye State in the Thanksgiving weekend Corn-Shucker Bowl. Get your popcorn ready! :P
