So a) what was the bird doing on the field (pitch) in the first place and b) my interpretation of the video is that he was trying to kick it off the field of play, not stomp it to death.

No, the owl gets on the pitch and either attacks the ball or just gets hit by it. They stop play and the camera shows the owl is stunned but still moving. Then some db away team player comes by and kicks it off the pitch, about 20-30 feet. That's probably what killed it.

That was dumb. Lucky for the player it wasn't in the US or UK where animal rights activists would have been screaming for his head. It was dumb, though.

I think the owl only suffered a broken leg from getting hit by the ball. It didn't die. The guy said he was trying to get it airborne to see whether or not it could fly :rolleyes:
