The bill to allow wine and stronger beer sales outside of liquor stores has been tabled till next year.

Link (http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?subjectid=11&articleid=20110301_11_A5_OKLAHO380664&archive=yes)

Considering some of the legislation that is getting through, this probably shouldn't have been the one tabled :(

I'm taking matters into my own hands. Homebrewing materials to arrive any day. First up, a pale ale and and American wheat for working out in the yard, and an Oatmeal Stout and Porter to age until next winter.

Suck it, Oklahoma beer Nazis.

Liquor store owners, primarily. And a few religious kooks that think their opinions should be state law for everyone.

I guess I'll have to keep going to the liquor store for beer. I just wish it was open sundays. I have two days off and that's one of them, same as most people. Trust me, god doesn't care what day you drink on...

I agree. Would it really be so bad if I could get a bottle of crappy champagne on a Sunday? Or if I could buy said bottle at Target?

The big nice ones with selection probably wouldn't be affected too much. But the stupid little ones you see come and go next to 7-ELEVENs, that were started up by some foreigners or a couple of frat guys that can't grow up after they graduate, those would probably disappear if they passed this law.

I've got 12 extract batches under my belt. My last 2 were Russian Imperial Stouts. These were so good I had an offer from a guy wanting to buy some. I aged them a year before I even started drinking them and have some left that is over 3 years old.

I want to move to all grain brewing but I've been procrastinating. I should get set up and start brewing in September or early October when it starts coolling off. The biggest challenge by far in my opinion is maintaining proper fermentation temperatures in the mid 60's in the hot Oklahoma weather. When I was in an apartment I could leave the fermenter in a small room with a window unit AC set low. I'm not quite sure how I'll manage the temperature regulation in a house.

My gf wanted to make tiramisu last sunday. Couldn't because she couldn't buy the kahlua. I was so mad that I could have had cake if I didn't live in Oklahoma with the ****ty alcohol laws.

Exactly. If they provide a real service, they'll last. It's called competition and selection for the consumer....liquor stores are terrified of their monopoly being taken away.

I'm the kind of guy that had to use all the restraint I could muster, to keep from jumping straight into all grain.

Having two small children who love nothing more than breaking ****, I am planning for the coming eventuality of the garage getting too hot. Also I want to make a Dunkel for a German friend of mine, Dunkel being a lager, you know what that entails. I am shopping old fridges, one for fermentation and another for a kegerator. Since I will be using a thermostat override, a deep freeze would work as well. Now when do I start running out of space...?

:D I appreciate the offer, but I was thinking more along the lines of...how many gall darn refrigerators can I fit in my garage, before there is no room for vehicles? :D

Screw it. It's all about priorities.

I'm sure I will do that in the interim. That won't help me ferment at lager temps, but if momma can keep the the little monsters out while I'm gone, it will be fine for ales.

Ah, well yeah if you want to do lagering temps you'll need a cheap fridge that can hold a carboy at least.

Thought about that but then you get into your home security set-up and most likely a higher utility bill then the brew is worth. In my old set up the window AC was my entire AC for my living space and not supplemental just for the beer.

I don't think the air temp in any closet in the summer will be below 70 -75. I guess I can experiment by taking a carboy equipped with a temperature strip and filling with water and see what the liquid temperature average is in various areas.

You also have to factor in that the yeast activity will raise the temp. a little as well. A modified fridge box of some sort is the best solution if one can be rigged up that can reliably keep a stable temp. and not jack your utility bill.

There would be no guarantee that they would sell them on Sundays in stores. Take Florida for example. You can't buy beer on Sundays until noon even tho the product is on the floor. I could see Oklahoma doing something stupid like that. No high point beer and wine sells on Sundays.

Oh, for crying out loud. Nothing bad has ever happened to anyone who couldn't buy liquor or strong beer after the liquor stores have closed. If you have to drink late at night or on Sunday, it doesn't take that much planning.

During the summer, I keep my house at 69-70.

No two lives are the same. It is illegal for me to stop and buy beer on my way home from work. Maybe I'm don't want **** water today, maybe I want a sixer of Stella or a microbrew. Maybe I don't want to send my wife. Maybe I want to walk the isle and look for something new. Maybe it's none of yer gawd damn bidness when or were I buy my beer.

All I'm saying is; for a long damn time anyone facing your insurmountable dilemma, simply had to plan a little ahead. Buy whatever you like when the stores are open. If you work 9-9 six days a week, I'm sorry. A lot of things aren't open for you, then.

You are 100% correct that it is none of my damn business when or where you buy beer. I never intended to imply it was.

During Prohibition my great grandparents had a sign in their bar:

Near Beer Sold Here........Real Beer Sold Near Here.

Of course they were Irish and the sign was a way to say F***Y** to the Feds. :D

Nice, you are making me want to dust off the brewing equipment Dehalew.

OuDoc gave me some good tips on temperature regulation (using a big Wal-Mart tub half filled with water and exchanging apple juice bottles filled with ice each day). Right now would be a perfect time to brew as ambient heat and cold will not matter. I am going to get into all-grain brewing this fall. I'll need to get a wort chiller and mush tun. These will be 10 gallon batchs so the scale will be more than I've been used to, but there will be a lot more brews to quaff.

So, who are the opponents of this bill? Maybe the liquor store owners or the liquor distributors, which could lose big money, if the bill was passed.

The lobby comprised of liquor store owners, if there is such a thing in Oklahoma, would be small potatoes as such things go. Of these, the stores that would be most affected would be the large volume places. The small stores don't take in as much in beer sales as they do in liquor, because the don't have the space to stock all the brands in large quantity.

Distributors don't care who they deliver to.

Who would be affected? The grocery stores would have to find shelf space for even more product on their beer aisle if wine is going to be part of the mix and I don't think they really want that headache.

Is there organized opposition to this bill? I don't know, but except for going wet in 1959, I have yet to see a change in Oklahoma liquor laws that made things better for the consumer (my dad thought going wet was a huge mistake and he was one of the first to open a liquor store in OKC . . . said it was easier to get booze before they made it legal).

StarSan is the best. It's easy to use and it works. I never had any issues with a batch getting fouled due to sanitation issues. I liked it so much I bought one of the large bottles after I used my small one up. A little bit of that stuff foams up and goes a long way too.
