linux is a good OS if you have the spare time to learn how to yum (command line) and do updates.
I used fedora for a few years and was impressed. Free software and whenever you have questions go to the forum and 34 computer science bubbas will reply with the command line you need.

Open Office is some good software...especially if you dont want to fork out the money Microsoft makes you pay.
Does the same thing IMHO.

this is a modified list i made for when i do a new XP install:
Google Chrome: http://www.google.com/chrome
i'd suggest NoFlash and Adblock at least when installing extensions. that's all i really use.
free anti-virus
AVG Free: http://free.avg.com
free utility to mount .iso images as drives.
Daemon Tools Lite: http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/home
Free burning software.
InfraRecorder: http://infrarecorder.org
this isn't what i usually use for SSH, but lots of people do. don't ask ;)
Putty: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
free X-11 on Windows. works for most things. i'm fairly sure it works with Putty.
XMing32: http://sourceforge.net/projects/xming/
Free video player ftw!
VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
Flash Alternative. i haven't used it much, i don't think it works for Chrome.
FFDShow: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/
Alternative to Adobe Reader. gets less into your business...
FoxIt Reader: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/
Open Office: http://www.openoffice.org/
Itunes: http://www.apple.com/itunes/
Firefox: http://www.mozilla.com
great extensions include, NoScript and AdBlock Plus. NoScript is for the fairly paranoid and can take a while to configure to where it's not a pain in your *** all the time, but it should keep you pretty safe from browser hijacks if used properly.
Mozilla's free mail client.
Thunderbird: http://www.mozilla.com
MyDefrag defrags quickly and will run daily.
MyDefrag: http://www.mydefrag.com/Manual-DownloadAndInstall.html
Irvanview crops and resizes images fast and easy.
IrfanView: http://www.irfanview.com/
Pidgin is an open source chat client, AIM, YIM, Google Talk, etc...
Pidgin: http://www.pidgin.im/download/
Pigdin facebook plugin: http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-facebookchat/wiki/Downloads?tm=2
Ext2ifs lets you mount Linux filesystems on Windows (ext2)
Ext2ifs: http://www.fs-driver.org/
Iron is a version of Chrome that doesn't send data to Google. you could install this in place of Chrome if you wanted.
Iron Browser: http://www.srware.net/en/software_srware_iron_download.php

Back when I used windows, instead of using putty and Xming, I found Cygwin to be a suitable more-in-one option.

No Mac stuff?

Wish I would have seen this before I started defagging last night. Drive was still degragging this morning. I haven't defragged in a year so I'm sure that didn't help.
Ivanview is great as an image viewing app.
No Mac stuff?
see my post above? I'm running OSX 10.6
In addition to what I'm running earlier, I also use
VLC (simply can't be beat for videos)
coconutBattery (if you're a laptop it's a must, it keeps track of your battery age, charge cycles, and health in a must easier to interpret way than going to system settings)
Little Snitch Configuration (monitor incoming connections to you're computer which is great because I can block google, espn, si, and almost any other site from accessing my connection)
MacPar deLuxe (unraring .r00-r.xx files)
PS3 Media Server (streaming content from my laptop to my PS3, music, video, pictures, and if you're tech savvy you can add in grooveshark and stuff like that)
SimplyRAR (unraring stuff)
Skype (duh)
As for paid apps, which I know it's for free, but Creative Suite 5 is great and Office 2011 is fantastic as well
