linux is a good OS if you have the spare time to learn how to yum (command line) and do updates.

I used fedora for a few years and was impressed. Free software and whenever you have questions go to the forum and 34 computer science bubbas will reply with the command line you need.

Open Office is some good software...especially if you dont want to fork out the money Microsoft makes you pay.

Back when I used windows, instead of using putty and Xming, I found Cygwin to be a suitable more-in-one option.

Wish I would have seen this before I started defagging last night. Drive was still degragging this morning. I haven't defragged in a year so I'm sure that didn't help.

Ivanview is great as an image viewing app.

In addition to what I'm running earlier, I also use

VLC (simply can't be beat for videos)
coconutBattery (if you're a laptop it's a must, it keeps track of your battery age, charge cycles, and health in a must easier to interpret way than going to system settings)
Little Snitch Configuration (monitor incoming connections to you're computer which is great because I can block google, espn, si, and almost any other site from accessing my connection)
MacPar deLuxe (unraring .r00-r.xx files)
PS3 Media Server (streaming content from my laptop to my PS3, music, video, pictures, and if you're tech savvy you can add in grooveshark and stuff like that)
SimplyRAR (unraring stuff)
Skype (duh)

As for paid apps, which I know it's for free, but Creative Suite 5 is great and Office 2011 is fantastic as well

i do hate Safari though. ugh.
