Dems leave Indiana House, stalling GOP labor bills

By TOM DAVIES

INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana House Democrats have taken a cue from counterparts in Wisconsin, leaving the Statehouse and stalling action on a GOP-backed labor bill.

Only three of 40 House Democrats were in the chamber when Republican Speaker Brian Bosma tried to convene Tuesday, leaving it short of the two-thirds needed for a quorum.

Rep. Charlie Brown of Gary tells The Associated Press he and Rep. Greg Porter of Indianapolis are traveling in Illinois, but won't say what their destination is. Rep. Peggy Welch of Bloomington also says she's "traveling."

The labor bill would prohibit union representation fees from being a condition of employment at most companies.

Wisconsin's Senate hasn't been able to take up a measure to strip nearly all public employees' bargaining rights since that body's Democrats left the state Thursday.

I think it's funny that all of the border jumpers go to Illinois :D

I've been to Wisconsin, I would think that Rockford probably made them feel at home.

They do have cheese curds in Rockford and a large number of unemployed union members.

Upon initial inspection...

It's either a very, very, very good photoshop because the edges on the word, 'OUR' are just as consistent as the edges around the other words in the sign.

Or it's not.

I'm betting on the latter.

Also, this is nice (http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/145627-dem-lawmaker-on-labor-protests-get-a-little-bloody-when-necessary).

"I’m proud to be here with people who understand that it’s more than just sending an email to get you going," Capuano said, according to the Dorchester Reporter (http://www.dotnews.com/2011/potential-us-senate-candidates-stir-union-rally). "Every once and awhile you need to get out on the streets and get a little bloody when necessary."

Just goes to show that some of the calls for civility after the Gabby Giffords shooting in January were only to score political points. Those calls certainly weren't because the parties actually believe in such things as civility and reasoned discourse.

I read they all go to Illinois because it is controlled by Democrats. A state with a Republican governor could pick them and take them back.

You know, I can somewhat understand why the people protesting in Wisconsin are protesting. They fought so hard to get collective bargaining for the public sector and finally got it in 2009. 2011 rolls around and the new Republican Governor wants to take it away.

Now, I agree with Governor Walker. But I can also sympathize somewhat with the demonstrators.

Indiana is a different kettle of fish as far as I'm concerned.

If you want to join a union, then great. Go for it. But nobody should ever be forced to join one as a condition of employment.

I'm not for destroying unions. But I am for a balance of power between unions and employers.

And oh yeah, elections have consequences.

it's all shiaty semantics.

"labor unions"

"freedom to collectively bargain"

How about my freedom to teach, manufacture, supply labor, put out fires, stop criminals and offer these services without being required to pay dues to some cartel?

It's a f'ing farce just as big as the crony capitalism that exist on the other side of the spectrum. Connected folks protecting their treasure that they fleeced from the taxpayers/shareholders/customers.

"Civility" is only a requirement for conservatives or the Tea Party.
