The St. Louis Rams got only a brief glimpse at Mark Clayton last season but it was enough to know they would like him around for the long haul.

The club has held discussions about re-signing the veteran wide receiver and it’s possible a deal gets done before the lockout date of March 4, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“We've had dialogue with Mark really since the time he got here," Kevin Demoff, the Rams' executive vice president for football operations, told Thomas. "He came on a one-year deal. We've had good discussions and we'll continue to have discussions with Mark and his agent throughout."

"He's certainly a candidate to get an extension done before the deadline. But if he doesn't, that wouldn't change our opinion on wanting him back."

The Rams picked Clayton up in a trade with the Baltimore Ravens prior to the start of the season. He made a quick impact with rookie quarterback Sam Bradford. He caught 22 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns in the first four games and then suffered a patellar tendon injury in his knee.

Clayton has been rehabbing and the expectation is he will be fully ready in advance of training camp. The question is whether he’ll be going to camp with the Rams.

That would be a HUGE help for Sam.

I think the Rams would have been in the play-offs with him in the line-up last year....

I hope Clayton gets another shot there. He is a great addition to that team. He is also a really great guy that deserves to be a super star.

I hope Clayton stays in St. Louis. He'd have a real chance to be the legit No. 1 on this team. Hopefully they can come to a reasonable agreement on terms and money.

I'm doing a mock draft for footballpros.com. I'm really looking at Julio Jones for the Rams. Would love to have AJ but no way he's still on the board at #15

Bradford to Clayton just makes me happy.

Heck, I could take that multi-billion dollar fast train to St. Louis and watch the games in the next few years... Imagine getting on the St. Louis Express in Chicago, being in St. Louis in about 1.5 hours. That is much less than the 4.5 hours it takes to drive there!!! Watch the game, then take the train back to Chicago, with no driving (except to the Chicago train station and back, about a 1 hour drive each way, oh and find a place to park the car for the day)

Heck, I would even drive there to watch those two guys!

It would be nice to get Clayton but they really need a better WR, to be the #1 WR

yeah, he doesn't seem like a #1 guy, really

It will be a matter of when he signs the deal and how many years it will be. Mark is not your typical NFL wr since he is a "team first" not a "me first" guy. It also helps that the other young receivers on the Rams (the whole team for that matter) absolutely love him which shouldn't be a surprise to anyone here. I am pretty certain Sam wouldn't mind having him either. :)

I think if he stays, it'll be a relationship like Manning/Harrison.

Without Harrison, Manning isn't as good. Without Manning, Harrison isn't as good. The two brought out the best in each other.

I could see Sam & Mark doing the same thing.

Glad to see that Mark will be back at 100% by April. Rams will still need to get the deep threat, but Clayton at #2, with Amendola, Alexander, and Avery coming back makes this receiving corps begin to look very NFLish.
