View Full Version : What is considered "Hallowed Ground" at other Universities?

The Toomers Corner thing got me thinking. I haven't been to a whole lot of other campuses, so I don't know where other special places or hallowed ground to congregate would be for other schools. For OU I think we have Campus Corner. You all seem to travel far and wide - what are the other realy cool places at other Universities?

I would not say that Campus Corner is hallowed ground at OU. not sure what would be other than Owen Field or the Seed Sower.

Just kidding, their field is sacred, noone except aggie players, aggie band, officials, aggie coaches, aggie athletic staff, tv crews, groundskeepers, other teams' cheerleaders, aggie yell leaders, other teams' players, other teams' bands, other teams' coaches, other teams' mascots, texas rangers escorting aggie coaches, highway patrol escorting the other teams' coaches, guys doing maintenance on the goal posts, are allowed on the field. To let anyone else on is to disrespect the aggies who died in war. So if a fan runs on the field, this is equivalent to defecating on those courageous aggies.

Unless all the aggie fans decide to run on the field like they did last year.

In the Big 12, here's what I can think of:

Texas: That big tower. It's iconic on campus, even when they don't light up the #1.

A&M: Everything. Just... close your eyes, roll over in the fetal position and try to not to offend anyone.

Tech: The Will Rogers statue that they wrap in streamers before games.

OSU: The spirit rider statue or the "Remember the 10" memorial. They would probably get violent if any opposing fans touched either one.

For us, I could see our Heisman Park or coaches statues getting more beloved as the years go by.

I have a question about TAMU. Since they are not a service academy, do their 'Cadets' have any real military status at all? Or are they simply a group of pathetic soldier wanna-be's who like to dress up in uniforms a la the gay Nazi guys in Blues Brothers?

I think they can go military if they want to, but they aren't like a reserve officer's training program or anything where military service is required.

Not too long ago I read where atm turns out the most officers in the US military, next to the service academies. I had always thought that the Corps of Cadets was an ROTC organization, but I guess not. Anyway, I don't trust a school that has a bunch of guys in white shirts, white jeans, and a towel to lead a bunch of delusional folks in "yells" not cheers.

I am not sure how true that is but another claim to fame is that more atm cadets died in WWII than cadets from Westpoint.

Now if think about it for a moment . . .

As far as I know, and I know really far, only the service academies and RTOC units are sanctioned by the U.S. gubment. Graduates of VMI, the Citadel and A&M, for example, are under no obligation to enter the military. If they do want to join the military they either have to enlist or apply for a commission, same as Joe-Sh** the Ragman.

I had a neighbor a few years back who was in the Corps while he attended A&M. Our kids were the same age and he asked me to help him move a couch one day. I go into his house and he has his riding boots enshrined in a glass case and a picture of himself standing at full attention with his sword and this far, far away look in his eye like he's about to enter the bowels of hell to rescue a ****in' collie or some shat.

Did he point out that he was carrying a rubber sword? They had to switch to rubber swords years ago after one of their "cadets" pulled his sword on that TCU cheerleader for running on the field.

The funny thing is I have a friend that graduated from A&M in the 80s. He said that the tradition back then was to try to have "relations" at midfield when he was in college. He said he has no clue when the field became a sacred WWII monument, but it wasn't in the 80s.

Another friend graduated in the 90s and said he went back years later and a "corp turd" (his words, not mine) tackled him for walking across some lawn wearing a hat. Apparently in the few years since he had graduated there developed some long standing tradition of not covering your head on a certain patch of green space.

Another interesting thing...they have a long-standing tradition to kiss after TDs, yet until 60 years ago it was an all men's school. Hmmmm..... :)

Ok, I'll continue the A&M hijack:

Texas A&M is an official Senior Military College, just like Norwich, VMI, The Citadel, etc. Technically, all students are supposed to be a member of the Corps of Cadets but the university was granted an exception to policy and now basically they are like any other co-ed college. (IMO, they should lose their SMC designation because of this.) Just because you are a member of the Corps of Cadets does not mean you are required to serve any time in the military. Band members are required to be in the Corps but few actually plan to serve.

As a Senior Military College, Texas A&M does commission more officers than an ROTC unit at a standard university. They actually produced more officers than West Point or any other college during WWII but I think The Citadel actually is the largest today.

Why exactly do they even have a Will Rogers statue? Oklahoma's favorite son?

They have no homegrown heros.

Will Rogers = Okie

Sam Houston = Okie/Tennessean

DKR = Okie (though the traitorous swine should be stripped of it)

It goes on and on. I suppose if they wish to lionize Oklahomans and Oklahoma, we'll just have to let them.

It seems like the neighborly thing to do. "You'd like to prostrate yourself at my feet and express your admiration while applying saliva to my boot soles?, Okay, I guess, if that's what you have to do."

My bad, I don't know dog breeds that well. :)

I've read a few articles on the Corps just because A&M traditions are a funny read, everything from the boys in white getting elected mostly on ordering other corps members to vote en masse for them (will non-corps students ever rebel and just vote all non-corps just once?) to senior boots.

EVERYthing is a tradition, EVERYthing will offend an aggie if not taken seriously, so I recommend EVERYone to just stay away from College Station and watch OU-A&M games from home. Nothing but bad experiences there :(

They have zero commitment to go in the military when they graduate. The Aggie band is not as loud as you would expect as some of them don't play an instrument but are great marchers. That was one thing we learned living in Texas that has come in handy over the years when an A&M fan sits around us. :) Ask them if it is true and get the death stare or 'how did you know?'

At Thanksgiving, which was a week after the Nebraska-A&M game. My aunt who doesn't even follow football came up to me and said, verbatim, "Texas A&M are like a bunch of communists. Correction: 20-30 of them are great marchers. The rest just follow the person in front of them. You can train chimpanzees to do an Aggy halftime show. And their biggest claim to fame is the recording session they did awhile back for Burlington-Northern to model their trains horns after.
