(More of a blurb than an article but David Ubben was handing out Big 12 valentines. Great read.)

4. Oklahoma. Thank them, the rest of the Big 12. A "laughingstock" is certainly too strong, but there would have been noticeable snickers from around the country if Nebraska had won the Big 12 and skated off to the Big Ten with the trophy in hand. But the Sooners climbed out of a 17-0 hole and knocked off the Huskers in Cowboys Stadium in the Big 12 title game. The loss sent the Huskers to the Holiday Bowl, where they self-destructed and faced a coaching overhaul in the offseason, rather than a coronation. If you're a fan of a Big 12 team, you ought to shake the hand of Sooners fans the next time you see them. They saved the league a lot of grief.

And the nicest thing about that victory is that Huskers have to live with the shame for many, many years to come. OU effectively beat them forever.

OU effectively beat them forever.

Not to be Debbie Downer, but we're likely going to home-and-home them on the anniversary of the game of the century.

:P we should make it so we have the first game, then buy em outta the second one if we win. THEN we can say that not only did we screw them over, but we effectively won forever... again.

nah, what am i saying. we'd definitely beat them twice in a row in eight or so years. :)

Well, OU being the daddy of the Big 12, couldn't allow the prodigal son to leave with ALL the money....

Oh, I know we'll meet them again, but that would not be a throw-away game; and with nothing planned at the moment, we either meet them in some improbable bowl pairing, or it's likely to be a long time.

And during that time, I will wear my OU apparel whenever I travel to Lincoln. And I will be very complementary of their football program. It always hurts more that way.

As a Sooner fan, I don't think anyone needs to shake my hand for that.... I didn't do anything except thoroughly enjoy watching it.

Uben was being funny and used hyperbole when he said that. He didn't really mean that people should shake sooner fans hands. The idea is that although rivals, other big 12 schools should be thankful OU beat Nebraska.

What a great day that was!
And they ended up as they should have for the season, crying in the locker room (seems that their QB started something, wonder if they all called their daddies to whine, LOL!).
I'm gonna have a hard time pulling for them to beat tosu, but I will, 'cause I hate tosu with a passion. As for the rest of the big ten teams, just beat enough of them to muddle that conference up! ;)

LOL....my college roommate's uncle was John Cooper, when he was the head coach at tOSU he invited me to games many times....always throwing the "we can get on the sidelines" thing at me. LOL

If they would have ever played Nebraska then I would have gone.

Ummm...I hope you're talking about the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Conference of the Little Sisters of the Poor, or whatever the long-winded 1920s Big Eight precursor is called...

Formation of the Big 12 = 1996 = Not a good time to be a Sooner fan in that rivalry.

I think that he was quite literal - stating that our hands should be shook.

or shaken.

I love this picture, except for the fact that Tom Osborne is criminally missing from it. I see mid-80s King posed with Bob Devaney...

we need that animated gif of kenny stills catching that awesome pass from Landry and running into the endzone and scoring a touchdown and making Husker nation weep with grief.

Yes, that's what we need. :-)

isnt there an anniversary to this game every year?
How is that fair that we have to play a double header including travel every November during the Thanksgiving holiday?!?!

Geez...some teams don't even have to play a conference championship!

Which anniversary? 2021? 2071?

2021. The home and home would either place us in Lincoln in 2020 or 2022, with the Norman game definitely on the anniversary of the Century game, since that's where the first one took place. I don't think it's finalized yet.

The fact that Nebbish was up 17-nil in the first half makes it even more soul crushing for the Huskers. It is a game that they literally dropped the ball on. It wasn't a ref screwjob, it was them fumbling. Refs don't cause fumbles.

I'm not sure which was worse... Neb losing a 17 point lead or Bama losing a 24 point lead at HOME to Auburn. :)

Neb blowing the 17 pt lead was better because that means we won! :D
