My wife and I had a baby last year. Five days after the little guy was born, she got a social security number for him at the SSA office in Denton.

So I go to efile our taxes this year and the IRS rejected it, stating they had no record of my son's name or SSN in their system. They say call social security.

My wife calls social security and is told by them that everything is fine in their system and to call the IRS back.

I don't know how many SO tweeps actually work for either government entity...but at what point does somebody in either organization take ownership of this issue and contact the other entity?

Is that allowed?

I went through something similar. Extra headaches are awesome.

In 2007 somebody filed a fraudulent tax return for my wife. We've always filed married/joint, lived in SoCal, have to pay in and the person filing single and was in Georgia and was getting a $10K return.

I filed my taxes and it triggered the IRS to stop all activities on the account until they could determine the real identity.I had to present my passport, mortgages, dependents ID, utility bills..etc. to prove my identity.

IRS determined I was who I said I was.....and still issued the return to the other dude's checking account which he promplty took the money from...and closed.

I've spent 3 years dealing with the IRS on this and trying to get our tax situation on track. One hand of the IRS knows what's going on...the other 12 hands don't.

I know you probably want to file your return electronically but I would suggest printing it out and filling via mail. Include a copy of your kids SS card. You can still direct deposit and your refund might take a week or two longer to deposit.

I'll do that.

With a letter explaining how ridiculous it is that Social Security shows him in their system but not in the IRS. And that it takes me having to file by mail to f***ing get it updated.

It amazes me how some people think the solution to our healthcare issues is to let government take it over.

So I saw a sign out on Peoria the other day: "REFUND ANTICIPATION LOANS"

I used to watch Judge Judy and there used to be so many headaches involving anticipated refunds - either people borrowing money saying they'd repay the loan back with their tax refund, or separated/divorces/never married parents ducking around on who gets to claim the kid for the several grand the government doles out for parenthood.

On 2nd thought, the letter won't do any good.

I'll just make a copy of my son's social security card and include it with the return.

If you really think you need a refund anticipation loan, you should probably rethink your financial situation.

Then again, these are people who have probably taken out a payday loan before.

These loans yield like 150% interest. They are a joke but people pay that money and it's very profitable.

Good idea. Honestly it won't even be read and most likely trashed. The folks who process the returns won't do anything. Just add the copy for reference in case the same problem arises. They may still kick it back and you might have to write the letter anyway.

Was he born in Kenya?

Yes, this makes a big difference!
If born in Kenya, you will have to contact the state of Hawaii for a certificate of live birth in another country. :D

Lots of people use their tax rtefund as a non-interest-bearing savings account. It's a ripoff for those RALs, but they need the money.

Yep. Unfortunately it's the only way some people can save money.

If Arizona required that, Brack would sue them.:pop:
