These sites are cool and all but it's hard to argue that they're not pirating TV broadcasts.

Still not sure why it's a homeland security issue though.

The nerd who works for the govt. and shut the websites down, got carried away and put a bunch of logos there. I'm surprised he didn't put these:

Just your hard earned cash before it hits your pocket. Not something you already paid for, because that would make him a dictator.

Nope. Totally different Departments involved here. Neutrality was the FCC and they were/are regulating ISPs. This is an entity bought and paid for by the entertainment industry to make suer their intellectual property isn't distributed illegally.

From Politico:

The federal government has seized the Web addresses of 10 websites that allegedly live stream sporting and pay-per-view events online, shutting them down just days before one of the biggest televised sporting events of the year: the Super Bowl (http://topics.politico.com/index.cfm/topic/SuperBowl).
The U. S. Attorney’s Office of the Southern District of New York (http://topics.politico.com/index.cfm/topic/NewYork), working in conjunction with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, seized the Web addresses Tuesday. The seizure affidavit was unsealed Wednesday.

The websites, which include channelsurfing.net and Spain-based rojadirecta.org, were said to illegally provide access to content from the major professional sports organizations, namely the National Football League (http://topics.politico.com/index.cfm/topic/NFL), National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League. The sites do not host the pirated sporting content themselves, but instead provide links to other websites where people can access it illegally.

Government officials argue that the sites are not only distributing pirated content illegally, but in the process, are also denting the revenues of the professional sports leagues and broadcasters as well as negatively impacting viewers.

“The illegal streaming of professional sporting events over the Internet deals a financial body blow to the leagues and broadcasters, who are forced to pass their losses off to fans by raising prices for tickets and pay-per-view events,” said Preet Bharara, U.S. Attorney in Manhattan. “With the Super Bowl just days away, the seizures of these infringing websites reaffirm our commitment to working with our law enforcement partners to protect copyrighted material and put the people who steal it out of business.”

Fans have increasingly abandoned watching sports games on their television sets, opting instead to watch them on their computers via the Web instead. The shift has jolted professional sports organizations, which are grappling with how to control the growing problem of the illegal streaming of sports games online in real time. The organizations copyright the content of their sports games — from the audio, video, text and images — and restrict others from distributing it without prior written approval.

But the government’s action didn’t provide a permanent solution to the problem. One of the sites that was shut down on Wednesday, ATDHE.net, has already reappeared at a new Web address, ATDHE.me.

The federal government launched a similar campaign last November that shut down 82 websites offering counterfeit goods and digital music and movie content. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and ICE Director John Morton had warned that the two agencies were committed to going after more websites that offer copyrighted content illegally.
Morton repeated that message during Wednesday’s operation.

“This swift action by our Homeland Security Investigations New York special agents and analysts sends a clear message to website operators who mistakenly believe it’s worth the risk to take copyrighted programming and portray it as their own,” Morton said. “We will continue to aggressively investigate this type of crime with our law enforcement partners.”

I can understand that whoever films the game and produces the show would be within their rights to control distribution. Fine.

I can understand why the US attorney's office is involved.

Homeland Security? What next? Call in air strikes when Safeway undercuts Reasor's prices on lettuce? Seems a bit over the top and childish.

And I'm not at all sure what the true justice is if someone is say, slingboxing a signal into an area that has no legit coverage. Like, for instance, trying to get OU football in most of Asia.

The Super Bowl is on fox, which is free. This is really ignorant. Good thing for me is that I have not watched an nfl game for 3 years now, and more than likely won't ever again. You know whats so funny about napster or anything else the government tries to do away with? Something always takes it's place.

The problem is these broadcasting companies aren't providing legitimate ways to watch sports online. ESPN is the only one that does, I think. More and more people are dumping their TVs and these companies need to adapt.

This is like putting a band-aid on a gun shot wound. I am sure it will stop the bleeding just a little bit but eventually they are going to have to actually get the shot treated and get the damn shell out. Why doesn't FOX just run a live feed on the net of the Super Bowl and then they can show how many people were using that? Plus its not like anyone is going to be like the Super Bowl only had 135 million viewers and not 134 viewers...either way it is a lot of damn people

The reason Fox is free is because of ads...

They charge ad prices based on viewership...

Lost viewership to illegal digital media will cause lower revenue for both the network and the locals...

Gandalf_The_Grey
2/3/2011, 05:05 PM
Yes but if they streamed it on their own website in high def quality, they could show them the numbers on there as well. Also really do you think Doritos is going to pay substantially less for a Super Bowl ad with over 100 million viewers because a few people want to watch it on the inner webz

I took a Sports Law class last semester, and we had a guess speaker who was head of intellectual property law for the NFL. This is the guy who is in charge of the NFL cracking down on such things as unauthorized use of the term "Super Bowl," and people in New Orleans using "who-dey" without authorization.

The worst part of it was he was not simply saying that he was enforcing the legally protected business interests of his employer. He was trying to convince a group of highly intelligent, highly educated people that he was standing on this moral high ground and defeating morally condemnable thieves and pirates. The guy was a lunatic.

My favorite site is hulu.com and they have ads, so the content is free. You can also watch full episodes on fox, so they obviously know how to do it. I know the process. I cant think of anything I have ever seen on those ads and then went out to buy it.

I know right...I work for a company that bases it entire business off peoples impulses. If people stop watching, then all of stupid idealogy would be worthless. What if people decide to start reading again?

I talked to OU about the possibilities of getting a feed into Japan when I lived there. There counter: $10 mill and I could have Japan. I asked about a single feed into a private home and I'd even agree to watch the ads. No go.
