Help me settle an argument with a friend by answering two questions:

1. Who actually ran the defense in 2004, Pelini or Venables? I say Pelini.

2. Why did Bo leave for LSU? Was it because Bob wouldn't give him full control over the defense? I started working for the Alumni Association in 2005 right after Bo left and hearing rumblings but could never get to the bottom of it.

Thanks!

I'd say you have confused yourself.

Venables certainly ran the defense. If memory serves, Orc face Bo was primarily the DB coach.

brent was DC, bo was asst. DC and worked with bobby jack with the DB's. Bo came up with the defensive scheme with the DBs before the "game not to be mentioned" to shut down that certain teams passing game.....

the LSU DC position opened up and Les Miles came calling for Bo. The day he accepted and went to LSU was one of the biggest days in OU history as far as I am concerned.... ranking right up there the day chuckie long left for the west coast.

Is it just me, or where they Co-Defensive Coordinators?

That's correct. I still have my media guide from that year and that's how he's listed. I remember being kinda pissed when he left and had three great years with LSU, while we languished in mediocrity under Brent.

Wouldn't that mean they both ran the defense?

The way I've heard it, Bob did a favor to a friend and gave him a landing spot for a year until he could land a DC position.

He was also the interim coach for Nebbish when Frankie was fired. But, if you really wanna impress your friend with your penini bread knowledge, tell him that Bo's real first name is "Mark" :)

yes but only one takes the responsibility of calling plays the other helps with game planning.

All I know is that our defensive backs severely under-performed that year.

Pelini has had plenty of success at other schools to overshadow his shortcomings in his one year at OU. Shoot, the person who worked with those guys the year before probably had just about as much to do with how they played as Pelini did.

Was that the dog-it-if-you-think-there-will-be-a-flag year? Uggh, that was so frustrating to watch :(
