tl;dr Egypt turned off the internet. Odds are the protesters are being summarily executed.

Apparently, they turned off cell phones and land lines as well.

Indeed. And we're considering an Internet Killswitch here as well.

Really? How do you even do that? How could our gov't outsmart our hackerbase?

I dunno...having piles of dirt (pick a place in the Middle East) with internet access is kinda silly anyway. :D

You can't. But the vast majority of internet users confuse the internet with facebook, so they're the ones that would be SOL.

From the BBC (via Ham Radio, if you can believe that)

1603: The BBC's Ranyah Sabry, in Cairo, reports: "There has been some sympathy towards the demonstrators from the security services. Right near to where I am stationed near the police hospital - which is only for officers - they are said to have been throwing masks out of the windows so that the protesters can cover themselves and avoid the effect of the tear gas."

1608: Al Jazeera TV reports that military trucks arrive in a Cairo square to the cheers of protesters.

I guess this is why gold and silver are skyrocketing today. Au is up $17.00/oz right now and Ag is up .71/oz.

This is different...
http://www.renesys.com/blog/2011/01/egypt-leaves-the-internet.shtml

At 22:34 UTC (00:34am local time), Renesys observed the virtually simultaneous withdrawal of all routes to Egyptian networks in the Internet's global routing table. Approximately 3,500 individual BGP routes were withdrawn, leaving no valid paths by which the rest of the world could continue to exchange Internet traffic with Egypt's service providers. Virtually all of Egypt's Internet addresses are now unreachable, worldwide.

Basically, they've pulled the plug out of the wall on pretty much all of Egypts ISPs. There may be a few people that can dial-up to foreign ISPs...and sattelite internet probably works. But those are really slow, and probably easily overwhelmed if too many people try to do it

I am sure since it's Obama it can only be of the most virtuous of intentions...

Obama may get power to shut down Internet without court oversight (http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/01/power-shut-internet-court-oversight/)

This whole thing is kind of inevitable (the unrest). The only two democratic (kind of) governments from Morocco to Tehran are Israel and Turkey. Sooner or later the autocrats and theocrats will fall.
But that is not to say they'll be replaced by anything better. Witness Idris being overthrown by Ghaddafi. That worked out well!
Strangely, Iraq could wind up an island of stability and decentish government. Comparatively.
On the plus side, this might open up opportunities for radicals to slaughter each other in Costco numbers.

He basically addressed his people at midnight and right after his address he asks his government to step down so he can appoint is own government. Wow!

Did you even notice that the legislation was introduced by Sens. Lieberman (a big-government Republican in all but name) and Collins (also a Republican)? You just read the headline from your tea-bag rag, and since it fit your mouth-breathing world-view then by God it really must be Obama's evil master plan to subjugate diminutive little egomaniacs.
