The guys on the South Oval are both mean and stupid (excluding Dean), so I'm going to start over here.

This is a fun game where I post a snippet from the ESPN analysis of a recruit from the 2006 season and on. Then you guys guess who the dude is and I tell you all how smart you are.

First up is a QB:

Has an outstanding feel for the game, makes few mistakes and understands the importance of ball security. Possesses sound, consistent mechanics. Delivery is quick, and his release point is high. Is a tall quarterback who rarely has a ball batted down. He is an excellent deep-ball thrower that can drop the ball in from 50 yards out. Does an excellent job of finding throwing windows. He shows excellent timing and displays very good field vision. Will make his progression reads, shows patience in the pocket and also does a good job of finding open receivers on the move after the original play has broken down. Has very good mobility. Shows quick feet and is fluid. Has a terrific pocket presence.

Next! A LB with a pretty good following:

On film, you love his great motor, energy and toughness when pursuing the football as a linebacker; not afraid to sell-out his body. Productive between the tackles flashing a great lateral burst from the backside hitting the run seam inside-out making plays on or behind the line of scrimmage; type of defender that needs to be blocked on every play particularly on the zone cutback. Difficult to beat to the perimeter with his excellent speed and sharp pursuit angles. Chases well sideline-to-sideline and overall range is very impressive.

NormanPride
1/27/2011, 03:48 PM
Next is a toughie. A cornerback who probably left too soon...

Has the fluid hips to turn and run, has the body control to adjust to the ball while it's in the air and is fast enough to stay with most receivers in the vertical passing game. Plays with a mean streak, has adequate strength and a nice frame to get bigger and stronger. Does a good job of getting hands into the receiver's frame and has the potential to be an excellent press corner. Possesses good change of direction skills, accelerates out of cuts and flashes the ability to blanket receivers underneath. Can plant and drive and shows good burst when attacking upfield.

NormanPride
1/27/2011, 03:56 PM
Okay, you want harder? Here's harder:

Carries his weight well and has above average lateral agility for a defender with his thickness. While not elite in one particular area he is very well-rounded, deceptively athletic for his size and feel he may currently be floating under the radar. Lacks great initial quicks and reactions skills but is sound in his reads and rarely takes himself out of position. Mirrors backs with proper leverage and adequate redirection skill. At his best filling his middle run gaps on Iso or two-back power schemes. Shows good downhill burst and short-area power at the point of attack. Rarely gets turned and does a very good job utilizing his hands scraping off blocks and staying clean. Makes very solid contact as a tackler but does need to wrap up a bit lower. Does not lose a lot in transition opening to turn and run or retreating in coverage. Lacks great speed but is football fast chasing off-tackle and to the sideline. Long upper-body helps him cover more ground.

Dammit! Okay, next up is a DL player:

He has the frame to bulk up and play either position and has good size in general for a high school prospect. Right now his strength is rushing the passer. He has a good get-off and displays the burst to get up-field and turn the corner and beat a blocker with speed. He needs to keep improving his pass rush arsenal, but does show the ability to set up a tackle and quickly counter with an inside rush. He displays the mindset to get his hands up if he can't get to the quarterback. He is solid versus the run and will use his hands to take on and separate from a blocker.

Next up: a key player!

You would classify him as a strong safety/outside linebacker 'tweener, but he shows enough ability to make the transition to the college level as a big, physical safety. He has a good frame, and how he physically develops could ultimately determine where he plays, but he could very well wind up as a physical monster in the secondary. He locates the ball well and quickly gets to it. He does a great job of running the alley and making plays near the line of scrimmage. He is not afraid to mix things up near the line of scrimmage. He is a very aggressive player versus the run, and that could hurt him at times, but he will just need to learn to curb some of that aggressiveness. He does a good job of playing deep and reading the quarterback's eyes. He breaks well on the ball and times up his hits very well.

Who's that pokemon?

He has excellent straight-line speed and acceleration. He is a threat to turn a short gain into a big play but is also a vertical threat who plays bigger than his size. Has very good hands. Excellent pluck and run. Will extend his arms and snag the high ball. Good leaper. Very sneaky route runner who shows the ability to find soft spots in zone and knows how to eat cushion and create separation versus man coverage. Will get downfield and throw a block. Shows tremendous concentration and will adjust to the deep and poorly thrown ball. Is also a clutch performer, makes a lot of big plays, particularly in traffic or on contested match-ups. Great body control. Shows burst in and out of cuts. However, he is very raw. Needs route work to become more crisp; he rounds cuts and improvises a lot.

A bit tougher...

His ability to shut off the outside running lane should only improve with his tall frame that has potential to add 25 pounds of bulk. Shows the range and lateral mobility at safety to get through the trash, find sharp pursuit angles, and chase to the sideline. These attributes should offer excellent range as an outside backer in run support. Currently, possesses great coverage technique which should only improve with his transition into the box. Flashes skills to mirror fast receivers at corner, and the speed to turn and run with them. This should translate into excellent one-on-one match-up possibilities on backs and even inside slots at linebacker.

Mad Dog Madsen
1/28/2011, 03:30 PM
That is a tough one... But I'm thinkin' Joseph Ibiloye.

NormanPride
1/28/2011, 04:47 PM
Good shot. That's correct!

NormanPride
1/28/2011, 04:48 PM
Has great range and a natural feel for the game. He is extremely lean and really needs to add overall bulk and upper body strength, but has long arms and is very smooth. Has the first step to drive defenders off the line and gets into routes quickly. Can create separation working against man coverage. Sets defensive backs up with quick feet and defensive backs must be aware of double moves. Shows good recognition skills for such a young player and seems to know how to attack defenders' technique. Plays with a mean streak and really works to get off press coverage. Uses frame to shield defenders from the ball, has the strong hands to make the touch catch in traffic when focused and is a nightmare in the red zone.

Next, a WR.

A shifty RB...

We see more of a complete package at the next level. Size, speed, in-line toughness -- it's all there with this guy. He has a strong, compact frame and very good potential body composition (with some added bulk) to remain durable at the next level and carry the load. Attacks the hole and reaches top-speed very quickly. Wastes little time squaring up and finding the nearest north-south seam. Picks and darts well through initial traffic, rarely giving defenders a clean shot or taking unnecessary lateral cuts. Finds the shortest distance to the end zone. Able to cut sharply and decisively at full steam to make the first defender miss through the hole or hit the cutback crease.

NormanPride
1/31/2011, 11:22 AM
Hmm...

He gets his hands inside and controls lineman, he also has a very nice quick "swim" move that he uses to penetrate. He displays the strength to push offensive lineman back along with the size to take on double teams and anchor. He is a very active player that pursues hard, and constantly works to shed blocks. He does a nice job of locating the ball, takes good angles, and tackles well wrapping ball carriers up. He is a triple threat as a pass rusher as he has the quickness to beat lineman off the ball, the ability to use moves, and the strength to collapse the pocket.

Mad Dog Madsen
1/31/2011, 12:06 PM
Too easy... Gerald McCoy.

NormanPride
1/31/2011, 12:09 PM
Yup, that was an easy one.

He shows solid hands and foot quickness to adjust from the press alignment. He shows good overall play speed and can stay in the receiver's hip pocket on crossing routes. Can run with receivers downfield on deep routes. He has good foot quickness and sharp feet. He has solid transition quickness. Comes up quickly in run support and is a solid wrap-up tackler. He shows good recovery quickness when he gets out of position. Can jam and carry receivers downfield. He shows very good stop/start quickness for his height. He is quick and decisive in the return game -- when he sees the crease, he hits it and shows good straight-line speed.
