So basically he played in 2009, redshirted last year, even though he wasn't with the team, and he looses this year's eligibility because of the transfer even though he is a walk-on.

If he was transferring to KU to play basketball he would play next season.

Hell, he'd play THIS season.

Why did he sit out last year?

NormanPride

Personal reasons.

If he was transferring to KU to play basketball he'd be eligible for march madness.

So because he went one practice, he's ineligible? That's what it boils down to, correct?

Dumb

No... he is sitting out a year because he is transferring to a new university.

What if all the guys that we redshirted this year transferred to a new university this spring... do you think they should be allowed to play if we release them from their scholarship?

The difference is that a redshirt player practices all year and is part of the team.

He already sat out a year minus one practice - he wasn't redshirting. I wish the NCAA would use some common sense occasionally but apparently that's lost on them.

Great, isn't the world supposed to end in 2012? You would think they could make an exception for this circumstance.

I think the rule is from the time you enroll you have 5 years to play 4 seasons, barring any medical hardship. I could be mistaken, but that is how I understand it.

He might not have practiced there, but he wasn't enrolled here. That is the hang up. He is transferring this year, and the rules are pretty clear he sits out a year so I don't see any fault in the NCAA. I have no idea what the personal issues were (though there have been some rumors) but if he knew he was going to be transfering when he quit the team last year, he should have had a bit of foresight and done it then and not now.

He will still get a MNC ring, right? ;)

What do the rules state?

If the rules say he must sit out, he must sit out.

That's all there is to it.

The issue is not what the rule states. It's how ridiculous the rule is when applied to Wegher's situation.

Doesn't have to be. Since you have 5 years to play 4 years, the "redshirt" year is just that extra year that you don't play. It really doesn't matter what you do that year.

If he went to Ohio St. they would let him play, NCAA is funny that way

Indeed. I really wish the NCAA would use a little bit of discretion with situations like these. No reason for him to sit out imo

I'd rather the NCAA always apply the rules as they are written. With more flexiblity would only bring out the appearance of favoritism when decisions go different ways.

They've decided they don't want us to have our players.

After absolutely bizarre rulings with Mike Balogun and Ryan Reynolds, this doesn't surprise me at all.

I actually expected he wouldn't be playing until 2012 because of the rules. I didn't even think that there would be any attempt to do otherwise?

Maybe he should play a year at a jr college to keep the rust off......

I wonder why there is a procedure to apply for a waiver if that is all there is to it

Maybe sometimes that is not all there is to it.
