FWIW, Patton was a Democrat and came from a long long line of committed Democrats. They were old-South Democrats though...Patton's family moved out to California from Virginia to get away from reconstruction. His family was rabidly pro-Confederate. His mother once took her cane and bashed a man over the head for saying "amen" when the Presbyterian minister said a prayer for the President after the war when they arrived in California. In fact, Patton's Great Uncle Tazwell Patton is depicted by Ted Turner in Gettysburg and Gods and Generals. I mention all of this not to bring up another Civil War argument, but to point out that Patton was very much a Democrat. His father was a Democrat politician.

In any case...saying they were very pro-Democrat would be an understatement. Patton himself rarely made political statements (surprisingly enough), but what he did say during his life was actually quite profound. Late in the war, he made the statement that "the liberals" didn't understand the threat posed by Communism because they themselves were "soft" on the communists.

I any other argument on this forum, some LWer would make the same argument to say that the pro-slavery southern Demoncrats eventually became today's Repubicans.
Just sayin'!

Yep. The Democrats in Patton's day bore no resemblance to the present day "Progressives" that dominate the current Democratic Party.

So democrats became republicans and vice-versa due to the onset of the civil rights movement.

No. There has been a gradual shift to the left by all since the early 60's.

Republicans became Democrats and Democrats became Socialist Progressives.

Check this out, the real voice of General Patton. It's nothing like you would have ever guessed, kind of a high voice:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYjnWXFTQkM&feature=related Regardless, he was a great leader.

They did.

I'm guess is "misread" the "they (meaning Patton's parents) were very pro-Democrat was an understatement".
