View Full Version : ESPiN - Texas loses No. 1 recruit, No. 1 ranking

Texas had plenty of turnovers during the season and more after it, replacing six assistants on Mack Brown's staff.

Remarkably, Texas' top-ranked recruiting class remained intact with little wavering.

That is, except for its No. 1 recruit, Christian Westerman. The Chandler, Ariz. offensive tackle decommitted from Texas on Friday and pledged to the reigning national champion Auburn Tigers.

Westerman is the nation's No. 6 overall recruit and No. 2 offensive tackle prospect. He originally committed to the Longhorns back in April, and until today, was one of just two Texas commits from out of state among the class of what is now 22 ready to sign for 2011.

As a result, Texas has now lost what looked like a death grip on the No. 1 spot in ESPN's class rankings. Florida State, who hosts Oklahoma in 2011, has taken over the top spot.

It's only one player, and there's no reason to overreact, especially when Westerman isn't leaving Texas for the Plains. The Longhorns offensive line coach in 2010, Mac McWhorter, retired after the season and Westerman's close relationship with Auburn offensive line coach Jeff Grimes was a reason for the switch. Westerman took an official visit to Auburn recently, also.

The Longhorns reportedly spoke with Grimes about their offensive line coaching vacancy, but hired Stacy Searels from Georgia on Thursday.

I hope this guy realizes he won't be blocking for Cam Newton, and therefore they're gonna go 8-4 or 7-5 every year that he's there. I'm glad he switched, but he would have a much better chance at winning at Texas.

Auburn? really? Does anyone think theyll be any good again now that Cam has gone?plus the NCAA has them in their crosshairs....

On the other hand, Texas likes to make fun of us for raiding other states for recruits, so this makes them look less hypocritical.... lol

Well with all these good recruits going there, they may continue to be a good football team.
