Jan 20, 1981: Ronald Reagan becomes president

http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab7/Okla-homey/Ronald-Reagan-First-Inauguration-Photo.jpg

30 years ago today, the greatest president of my lifetime, Ronald Reagan, is sworn in as the 40th president of the United States.

More than any president since the Texas-born Lyndon Johnson, Ronald Reagan's public image was closely tied to the American West, although he was raised in the solidly Midwestern state of Illinois. In the 1930s, Reagan moved to California, where he became a moderately successful Hollywood actor. Thereafter, he always considered himself a true westerner in spirit.

http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab7/Okla-homey/ronaldimages.jpg

Government always finds a need for whatever money it gets.
Ronald Reagan

Reagan's image as a westerner was reinforced by his acting career. Although he acted in other genres as well, many of Reagan's movies were B-grade Westerns like "Law and Order," in which he played a sheriff who was the only law "from Dodge City to Tombstone!" When his movie career waned, Reagan made the transition to television as a host of the hugely popular showcase for western stories, "Death Valley Days."

Government does not solve problems; it subsidizes them.
Ronald Reagan

Reagan's film and TV career not only won him public-name recognition but also helped establish his enduring "good-guy" reputation. A few of Reagan's roles in non-western movies included men of questionable character, but in Westerns he usually played the brave and wholesome sheriff or cowboy who killed the outlaws, saved the school marm, and brought justice to the Wild West.

http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab7/Okla-homey/ronaldCollageindex.jpg

Though it is difficult to estimate exactly how important such positive roles were for his subsequent political career, surely Reagan's "white hat" movie image helped win him some confidence and votes.

Reagan's politics also increasingly reflected the mythic western image of rugged independence and self-reliance. Although he had been a liberal New Deal Democrat as a young man, by the 1950s, Reagan had become a hard-line conservative.

Government exists to protect us from each other. Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves.
Ronald Reagan

As president of the Screen Actor's Guild (1947-52, 1959-60), he won national attention as an outspoken anticommunist, and he began to view even the mild federal socialism of the New Deal as destructive to individual initiative and freedom. Switching his allegiance to the Republican Party, Reagan won two terms as governor of California (1967-75), where he gained a devoted national following that helped him win the presidency.

http://i844.photobucket.com/albums/ab7/Okla-homey/ronaldReaganAlbum.jpg

I've never been able to understand why a Republican contributor is a 'fat cat' and a Democratic contributor of the same amount of money is a 'public-spirited philanthropist'.
Ronald Reagan

During his eight years as president of the United States (1981-89), Reagan redefined the center in American politics, moving it away from the liberal Democrats and towards the conservative Republicans.

After a long struggle with Alzheimer s disease, Ronald Reagan died on June 5, 2004. He was buried at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

[Dr. Emmett Brown is doubting Marty McFly's story about that he is from the future]

Dr. Emmett Brown: Then tell me, "Future Boy", who's President in the United States in 1985?
Marty McFly: Ronald Reagan.
Dr. Emmett Brown: Ronald Reagan? The actor?
[chuckles in disbelief]
Dr. Emmett Brown: Then who's VICE-President? Jerry Lewis?
[rushing out and down a hill toward his laboratory]
Dr. Emmett Brown: I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady!
Marty McFly: [following Doc] Whoa! Wait! Doc!
Dr. Emmett Brown: And Jack Benny is Secretary of the Treasury.
Marty McFly: [outside the lab door] Doc, you gotta listen to me.
Dr. Emmett Brown: [opens the door to the lab] I've had enough practical jokes for one evening. Good night, Future Boy!

[closes the door leaving Marty outside]

Damn ****ing right. And a tremendous one at that. He brought our military out of the dark ages and that **** ain't cheap. I am envious of the men and women who got to serve under Reagan and subsequent presidents. When I was in we were treated like ****, still living in WWII barracks, still eating WWII C-Rats, still wearing WWII unis and web gear (belts/ammo pouches/canteens/mess kits), still wearing WWII steel pot helmets, still jumping with WWII T-10 parachutes, etc. Everything was worn out from Vietnam - including the soldiers. FTA (**** the Army) was the number 1 tattoo guys got downtown. It was a terrible time to be in.

Ronald Reagan spent money where it damn right should have been spent. You can bash him all you want for his "Reaganomics" but to me he's nothing short of a hero.

I don't enjoy running down the old man. He was a good person and inspiring speaker/leader at times. I just believe if you're the boss of anything and you do not balance the budget; you're a failure. Just a little quirk of mine.

No, they hate his guts for getting sucked off in the Oval Office and then having the audacity to come on and say he didnt have sexual relations with that woman. Because technically he wasnt lying, they had defined sexual relations as intercourse and he only got a blowjob. Which I have no problem with. The dude was married to Hillary.....who wouldnt look outside for some action.

I suppose my point is that a congress full of people who were happy to cut spending sent those bills to his desk . You're right though, Reagan could've repealed a few spending bills more than he did.

Not quite exactly true. Reagans battles with Tip O'Neil and Ted Kennedy were legendary and Reagan made it clear that the budget had to include certain cuts or he wasn't going to sign it....and he didn't.

So...forcing them to make cuts is a bit different than people "happy to cut spending" especially when it wasn't his party in power.

What many don't know is that Reagan and O'Neil were very good/close friends and were able to put politics aside.

What a visionary.

The Taliban as we know it didn't form until 1994.. This picture was taken in 1985. The Taliban didn't become the the strict form until Mullah Omar took over in 1996. Who was President during that time? I'm sure it wasn't Reagan.

These people were, I'm sure, the mujahideen who were fighting the Russians. Did they use the term "taliban" yes, but not the sense we know now.

The picture is trying to say that all mujahideen were Taliban. Nonsense.

Ahmad Shah Massoud fit the description of Reagan. What happened to him? Killed by al-queada two days before 9/11

A devout Sunni Muslim reportedly also always carrying a book of Sufi mystic Ghazali with him, he strongly rejected the interpretations of Islam followed by the Taliban, Al Qaeda or the Saudi establishment. His followers not only saw him as a military commander but also as a spiritual leader.

Following the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan the Wall Street Journal named Massoud "the Afghan who won the Cold War". After the collapse of the communist Soviet-backed government of Mohammad Najibullah in 1992, Massoud became the Minister of Defense under the government of Burhanuddin Rabbani. Following the rise of the Taliban in 1996, Massoud returned to the role of an armed opposition leader, serving as the military commander and political leader of the United Islamic Front (also known in the West as Northern Alliance).

On September 9, 2001, two days before the September 11 attacks in the United States, Massoud was assassinated in Takhar Province of Afghanistan by two suspected Arab al-Qaeda suicide bombers posing as journalists. The following year, he was named "National Hero" by the order of Afghan President Hamid Karzai. The date of his death, September 9, is observed as a national holiday known as "Massoud Day" in Afghanistan. The year following his assassination, in 2002, Massoud was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, although the prize can only be awarded to a living person.

Stereotypes are quick and easy aren't they? Dark skinned.. Wear those towels on their head... Treat all women the same... Done!

Let's read a little more about Ahmad Shah Massoud shall we?

National Geographic concluded in its documentary "Inside the Taliban": "The only thing standing in the way of future Taliban massacres is Ahmad Shah Massoud."

Life in the areas under direct control of Massoud was different from the life in the areas under Taliban or other (i. e. Dostum's) control. see video In contrast to the time of chaos in which all structures had collapsed in Kabul Massoud was able to control his troops very well during the period starting in late 1996. Human Rights Watch cites no human rights crimes for Massoud's troops in the period from October 1996 until the assassination of Massoud in September 2001.

Massoud created democratic institutions which were structured into several committees: political, health, education and economic. Still, many people came to him personally when they had a dispute or problem and asked him to solve their problems. Massoud signed the Women's Rights Charter in the year 2000. In the area of Massoud, women and girls did not have to wear the Afghan burqa. They were allowed to work and to go to school. In at least two known instances, Massoud personally intervened against cases of forced marriage.

To Massoud there was reportedly nothing worse than treating a person like an object. He stated:

"It is our conviction and we believe that both men and women are created by the Almighty. Both have equal rights. Women can pursue an education, women can pursue a career, and women can play a role in society -- just like men."

Jean-José Puig describes how Massoud often led prayers before a meal or at times asked his fellow Muslims to lead the prayer but also did not hesitate to ask a Christian friend Jean-José Puig or the Jewish Princeton Professor Michael Barry: "Jean-José, we believe in the same God. Please, tell us the prayer before lunch or dinner in your own language."

It's too bad that the Clinton administration supported the Taliban and once asked Massoud to surrender to the Taliban and told him to not attack when the Taliban was vulnerable.

But hey.. He looked like the Taliban to uniformed eyes and that is all that counts.. Right?
