PHILADELPHIA—An abortion doctor who catered to minorities, immigrants and poor women was charged with eight counts of murder in the deaths of a patient and seven babies who were born alive and then killed with scissors, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 69, made millions of dollars over 30 years, performing as many illegal, late-term abortions as he could, prosecutors said. State regulators ignored complaints about him and failed to visit or inspect his clinic since 1993, but no charges were warranted against them, District Attorney Seth Williams said.

Dr. Gosnell "induced labor, forced the live birth of viable babies in the sixth, seventh, eighth month of pregnancy and then killed those babies by cutting into the back of the neck with scissors and severing their spinal cord," Mr. Williams said.

Mr. Williams said patients were subjected to squalid and barbaric conditions at Dr. Gosnell's Women's Medical Society.

Authorities went to investigate drug-related complaints at the clinic last year and stumbled on what Mr. Williams called a "house of horrors."

"There were bags and bottles holding aborted fetuses were scattered throughout the building," Mr. Williams said. "There were jars, lining shelves, with severed feet that he kept for no medical purpose."

The clinic was shut down and Dr. Gosnell's medical license was suspended after the raid.

Workers, some of whom were also charged with murder, were untrained and unlicensed, including a high-school student who performed anesthesia with potentially lethal narcotics, Mr. Williams said.

Dr. Gosnell and nine other employees are in custody, authorities said.

Dr. Gosnell has been named in at least 10 malpractice suits, including one over the death of a woman who died of sepsis and a perforated uterus

As revolting as this is, I don't see a huge difference between him and the "normal" abortion doc. They both kill the kids - albeit at different stages of development, but it's still killing.

That being said, I've had to put down newborn puppies before (momma died). I've also had to put down puppies that *******s have dumped on my place. It is gut-wrenching and disgusting. It's hard enough shooting them - I couldn't even imagine cutting their spinal cord with scissors - and I'm talking about ****ing dogs here, not humans.

This guy needs to have his spinal cord cut with scissors too. Dull scissors that take a week to penetrate his POS spine.

From a different article.

He said Gosnell's clients, many of whom were poor, were charged $325 for a first-trimester abortion and between $1,625 and $3,000 for an illegal abortion after 24 weeks.

You mean you don't believe what pro-choicers tell us? When the baby passes through the birth canal, it magically turns from non-human into human.

I don't know if that's exactly how pro-choice folks call it. What would the non-human be? My pro-choice stance is don't go back to the days of scared girls using a hanger because they don't have a choice bleeding out all over their pretty unicorn decorated room. So I guess that means I think pro-life people are really pro-teen girls bleeding out all over their pretty unicorn decorated room because they had to use a hanger.

Please let me know if I found the appropriate level of dialog for this forum. :pop:

From the Report of the Grand Jury with pictures that I would rather have not seen ever. I am not even going to link to it.

After 1993, even that pro forma effort came to an end. Not because of administrative ennui, although there had been plenty. Instead, the Pennsylvania Department of Health abruptly decided, for political reasons, to stop inspecting abortion clinics at all. The politics in question were not anti-abortion, but pro. With the change of administration from Governor Casey to Governor Ridge, officials concluded that inspections would be “putting a barrier up to women” seeking abortions.

Bureaucratic inertia is not exactly news. We understand that. But we think this was something more. We think the reason no one acted is because the women in question were poor and of color, because the victims were infants without identities, and because the subject was the political football of abortion.

The search team discovered fetal remains haphazardly stored throughout the clinic – in bags, milk jugs, orange juice cartons, and even in cat-food containers. Some fetal remains were in a refrigerator, others were frozen.

They described blood-splattered floors, and blood-stained chairs in which patients waited for and then recovered from abortions. Even the stirrups on the procedure table were often caked with dried blood that was not cleaned off between procedures. There were cat feces and hair throughout the facility, including in the two procedure rooms. Gosnell, they said, kept two cats at the facility (until one died) and let them roam freely.
The cats not only defecated everywhere, they were infested with fleas. They slept on beds in the facility when patients were not using them.

We discovered that Pennsylvania’s Department of Health has deliberately chosen not to enforce laws that should afford patients at abortion clinics the same safeguards and assurances of quality health care as patients of other medical service providers. Even nail salons in Pennsylvania are monitored more closely for client safety.

The State Legislature has charged the Department of Health (DOH) with responsibility for writing and enforcing regulations to protect health and safety in abortion clinics as well as in hospitals and other health care facilities. Yet a significant difference exists between how DOH monitors abortion clinics and how it monitors facilities where other medical procedures are performed.

Indeed, the department has shown an utter disregard both for the safety of women who seek treatment at abortion clinics and for the health of fetuses after they have become viable. State health officials have also shown a disregard for the laws the department is supposed to enforce. Most appalling of all, the Department of Health’s neglect of abortion patients’ safety and of Pennsylvania laws is clearly not inadvertent: It is by design. …

State health officials knew that Gosnell and his clinic were offering unacceptable medical care to women and girls, yet DOH failed to take any action to stop the atrocities documented by this Grand Jury. These officials were far more protective of themselves when they testified before the Grand Jury. Even DOH lawyers, including the chief counsel, brought private attorneys with them – presumably at government expense.

Yeah, I get your point Dean. Back when I was a teenager, I worked with a guy that we all knew had been in prison.

We were all curious as to what he did.

One day, we got him to tell us. His wife had given birth at home to a child they couldn't afford, so he drowned the baby in the bathtub. To me, same thing as an abortion.

But the law normally doesn't agree.

If we have to have abortions then there should be a rule.

You get an abortion ----- You get your tubes tied.
Then you get the guy who knowingly got you pregnant----And that guy gets snipped.

Keep the two irresponsible retards from making that mistake again.

Also - this guy should be killed. No death penalty. No trial. No jury. No unnecessary expense.

That's an interesting point. If we killed murderers using the scissor method, it would be considered a horrific act of unspeakable brutality. Yet we go to extreme lengths to make the execution of such vermin as painless and humane as possible.

Our DC/state leadership are great at producing convoluted laws and regulations and then fail to audit properly to see if standards are being met...see the Gulf oil disaster....see loan practices...
