The Eater Doomsday Map: 50 Meals to Eat in 50 States Before the Apocalypse (http://eater.com/archives/2011/01/14/eater-doomsday-map.php)

http://eater.com/uploads/kellerocalypsenow-528.jpg

Face it, we're all toast in this life, and since our days are numbered, we compiled a map of essential last suppers in each state. Which, if millions of fish carcasses washing ashore and multiple species of birds falling from the sky recently are any indication, may be sooner rather than later? (This map (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=201817256339889828327.0004991bca25af104a22b&z=2) of mass animal deaths ought to let you know how close you are to the apocalypse.)

Lucky for you, we're not much for conspiracy theories, so if we're not in any immediate danger (and depending on how savvy a diner you are) you might just be able to check a few of these off your list before you croak. These are the singled out destinations to check out all over the country... just in case.

To the map! >>> (http://eater.com/archives/2011/01/14/eater-doomsday-map.php#more)

This list sucks.

There are 10 places better in Seattle or the Tacoma area better than this place.

FAIL

Knowing the owner of Ike's is a really big deal. You should be proud.

I KNOW!! I'm trying to talk them into a Panera franchise, too!

What if you took Ike's chili and put it into a bread bowl?

That would be so ghey......

Ron's pwns Ike's. I mean I appreciate Ike's, I think it's the oldest restaurant in Tulsa (not still at the same location mind you), but I personally like Ron's better.

I think this list is supposed to be more about the places being iconic rather than the best in each state. Abe's in Clarksdale, Mississippi for instance, is not only not the best restaurant in the state, it isn't even close to being the best in the delta or even the best barbecue. But, it has been in the same location for over 80 years, and it sits right on the crossroads of highways 61 & 49.

Still, I think I'd likely take the original Doe's Eat Place in Greenville over Abe's. It has been there for a long time, is in one of the funkiest locations you'd ever expect to find a good restaurant and has some of the best steaks and tamales in the state.

If it's iconic you're looking for, then wouldn't something in OKC be better? I know Tulsa has good food, but some of the diners in OKC have been around forever.

Yep. I don't know what could be more iconic in Oklahoma eateries than Cattlemen's.

That's why I don't understand the Ike's decision. The name Ike's is old, but the restaurant it's currently in is a new creation, not much feel if you ask me. I'd rather they have picked Meers Burgers or something.

MMMMM, Meers.

If we're really going with something in OKC, I'd take Juniors over Cattlemen's any day.

I'd go for a box lunch at the Y in Jenks.

Cool idea and that would definitely be something fun to do, but I too am not sure about that list.

More appropriate than Ike's:

Meers, Cattlemen's, Kendall's in Noble, a couple of the Italian joints in Krebs, Jo's Pizza, and that Cherokee joint way out west on I-40.

Yes but now we're going to fight over Pete's or Isle of Capri.

Pete's is the correct answer, fyi.

This is one of those things that nobody is going to agree on. Everyone likes what they like. My two favorite non-chain restaurants are Tarahumara's in Norman or a place called Dan's Old Time Dinner on Western between SW 89th and SW 74th. Never going to make a list like this cause it's not near big/popular enough but it's been there for my entire lifetime. You should go check it out sometime if you like grilled onion burgers.

I don't think I've had skyline... But it's runny and flavorless, IMO.

Oh yeah! I've heard of that stuff. It's basically meat sauce. Yeah, Ike's is like that. I bet it would be okay on spaghetti or a potato.

FWIW, you can get Ike's chili without the spaghetti, cheese and other nonsense. In fact those are considered "special" add ins.

The Melting Pot is only good for dessert and even then I'd rather just go to La Baguette Bistro.

We're Oklahoma, they don't GAS, prolly just picked someplace off teh innerwebz with "history". After all, we only butcher our own cows, grow wheat for our own bread, and pluck our fresh veggies straight from our own gardens, WTH do we know about food?!?!??!

I've had steaks in OK that make you thank GOD for inventing the cow. To leave those places off the list instantly kills your cred, imo.

And from where I've lived, the choices for WA, HI, RI, VA, FL, and DC are suspect as well. Esp. HI. If you ever go there...Mekong on King St. YWIA.
