View Full Version : BVs D the last two years

Collier11

There are areas to criticize but the last two years have been solid. 2009 we were a top 20 D overall and in scoring D and this year we were #5 in TFL, No. 8 in Pass Efficiency Def, No. 8 in Turnovers gained, No. 11 in 3rd down efficiency against, all important stats.

Seems to me that there have been significant changes made from the 07 and 08 teams. And this is all while playing in a conference that throws the ball around

we just need a top 25 D next year. All i want.

Pass Eff. D is pretty meaningless, but so is that Red Zone won that OU was ranked low in...This D ended up doing a good job getting to the QB towards the end of the year which was good

Best CB combo that ive seen at OU in a while, wouldnt you agree? Also seemed like the 50 front (or whatever they call it) and a better mix of blitzed really helped this year

Plus, id say Pass Efficiency D is much more important than Total D since it is based off of YPG which is pretty much meaningless

I really liked Franks/Jackson more mostly because of their ability to match up physically with about any WR thrown their way..But this duo played well

I want a lineman that tears the other qb apart. We need that raw emotion from the big boys in the trenches. I'd rather have a sick run d than a good passing d.

I think BV has assembled a good defense. If we can mount a decent line, we will be really....really good.

PDXsooner

all important stats.

I've come to believe that the only defensive stat that really matters is points per game. I really believe the rest can be very misleading. PPG is what it's all about. Keeping the other team out of the end zone.

i don't want a solid d
i want a nasty d
i want d that attacks
that wrecks the offensive timing
that lives on the edge
and when all is said and done and offense that outscores what ever that nasty *** d does.

#8 ummmm sure why not

Huh? What am I missing here? OU's D was adequate +, but not sure they'd qualify as GOOD. Air Force ate their lunch on the ground, and they seemed real vulernable on the passing game, esp middle of field. Pass rush sporadic, but maybe partly cause Adrian Taylor out.

Don't get me wrong.....OU has some stud players on D that occasionally turned some fantastic plays--T. Lewis, Box, Carter, Wort, Beal,Nelson, Hurst, R.Lewis, Alexander & McFarland is really coming along. i just didn't see them as an overpowering unit this past year.

boomermagic
1/15/2011, 10:28 AM
I think next year Mcfarland will be a stud.. Used to be about all ya had to contend with is the run { Old big 8} and we stopped that but now It's both.. Teams are more determined to be more balanced and although it's a must to stop the run first the pass burns us over the middle so many times.. The latter part of the season our defense started coming together and did a great job the last few games.. Everyone has a qb who can pass and a rb who can go the distance these days and most of them are well coached so it's a battle every week..

In a conf like the Big 12, do you really think ppg allowed is as important as say, the MWC. There is a reason that TCU allows like 10 and we allow around 20. The offenses are supremely better in the Big 12. I dont know that we will see another Big 12 Def allow 10ppg anymore

pphilfran
1/15/2011, 11:48 AM
The Sooner offense runs at a fast pace that allows for a lot of plays and a lot of possessions...the opponent will also get more possessions due to the Sooners pace...

The same defense behind a grind it out and shorten the game type offense will show significantly better stats in many areas...

Areas that would not be effected by the offensive game pace would be yards per rush, yards per pass /pass efficiency...

Stats like sacks per pass or tackles for loss per rush would be helpful...I could dream up a few others..

Key to next season is the dline, specifically dtackles IMO. If they play like this year, I do not think we can win it all. If some difference makers emerges, we have a good shot.

I guess my question would be when was the last time you were confident the D would stop any drives in the 4th quarter on a consistent basis?

If the Big12 Offenses are so great why do many of the teams continue to lose their bowl games?

Florida's D held us to 14 in 2008. That was a nasty D. Sure, if your D is good enough there's no reason you can't have a great ppg stat. I don't care what conference you're in.

...good defense???... I don't think were good enough, we should expect a GREAT defense, for gods sake were OKLAHOMA! If we could have a d-line for every game like we had against nebraska you wouldn't expect anything less then a National Championship at the end of the year.

Lotsa mentions of OU's defense being "solid" or "good," etc...

This is Oklahoma, solid and good shouldn't be enough, but for the most part during the BV tenure that's what we've had.

So...if you're baggin on BV, then good on ya mate. :D

Curly Bill

Nasty would be a good term to use for an OU defense, not solid or good. Solid and good are for teams like up the road from OU.

If you're satisfied with OU having a DC that ranks somewhere between #10-15 that's your bad. :P

I ain't jumping thru hoops to name anyone better, cause I just don't get that into it. :D Besides, it's Bob's job to find someone better, and he doesn't seem so inclined. :O

Since BV took over we have won 5 conf titles and played for 3 Natl titles in , in two of those natl title games BVs D held the teams about 3 TDs less than their avg, BV would have 2 Natl titles as head Def coord if the Off hadnt came up short

Of course OU's D held teams below their averages. We are talking OU here, and most teams play at least half cupcakes during the regular season.

...and yeah, there's plenty of blame to heap on KW and some of our offensive problems in the big game.

XingTheRubicon
1/18/2011, 10:00 AM
The combination of the Big XII opponents running successful spread offenses and our offense running 90 plays and kicking off 11 times a game, makes it impossible for BV to look anywhere near dominant. No one would.

Also, isn't it funny how the best/most revered DC's are in a conference where 80% of the teams run a ball control pro style offense...

That's an easy out for a difficult question. It's far simpler to say "XY ain't good enough" whether it be in politics, food, or sports. It takes real intelligence or hard work to actually come up with a solution.

If you can't name someone better, and you "aren't that into it", then maybe you don't really have all the information to make that call.

You should take the advice Coach Stoops gave to a loudmouth I knew. When you run your own big-time football program, you feel free to NOT hire Brent Venables.
